CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Student Artwork

Another busy week on campus! It was great to see so many parents attending conferences on Monday and Tuesday last week. We also saw some parents signing up for additional conference appointments outside of the two windows of time. This is an indication of the high demand in the parent community for wanting to engage with teachers in meaningful dialogue to support learning. As I mentioned last week, we will be looking at ways to increase access for parents in our next round of conferences in March.

We rounded out the week with a Halloween celebration this evening. While this was primarily a middle and elementary school event, many of our high school students signed up to volunteer to help out with games and running a spooky house for the younger students to enjoy. Next week, we look forward to seeing the high school students all dressed up for the Halloween Red Carpet event at lunchtime on the 31st.

After all the events and general excitement of the last few weeks, we are looking forward to putting our heads down and focusing on learning as we approach the end of the semester. Semester one exams will be upon us quickly (starting December 11), and your child should be working productively at home to support their in-class learning by reviewing and revising course material along the way. In your child’s CAC planner, there are several pages at the front devoted to effective study skills based on what we know about learning and cognitive science research into this area. If you have not reviewed these pages, it would be well worth doing so, as the strategies suggested there are sometimes counterintuitive to students but are known to effectively support studying for tests and exams. You may also find those resources here. Please note that the semester exams are required coursework components and their completion counts towards course credit and final grades for all students. As such, all students are required to be present in school for the full week before the winter break holiday and travel should not be planned until after December 15.

Thank you to those parents who completed the mathematics survey which was shared last week. There will be a further opportunity to learn about our math program and the curriculum review work currently underway at next week’s parent coffee morning, taking place on Wednesday at 9:15 am. I hope you will be able to join us for that.

WWW Update

Many thanks for completing the WWW pre-registration form this week. The WWW team will compile the requests by student, assign each student a number, and using a random number generator, will select students for registration based on the generated sequence. Students are placed in their highest priority WWW selection based on availability. Please remember that WWW experiences are made up of students from all grade levels, which means that for most WWW experiences, only 3-6 spaces are available per grade level.

The Verification form will be sent out next week (via email) as the final part of the process. Once students have been placed in WWW experiences, we ask parents to quickly sign and return the verification form, along with a USD 1000 down payment (for international trips) and a copy of a valid passport, acknowledging the WWW selection and agreeing to the payment specifications. Those who do not wish to enroll in their assigned WWW experience may decline the assignment, forfeit their place on the trip, and elect to participate in an on-campus experience. Wait lists for all experiences will be generated after the verification process is complete, and students who were not able to complete the registration process have an opportunity to sign up. Please contact Ms. McCall with any questions.
