CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Mapping Harkness Discussions

As a principal at a school like CAC, I always feel so privileged to be able to get out and about around school and visit classes to see learning in action. It’s always an absolute highlight for me to see students engaged in the vibrant and varied learning experiences that teachers construct for and with them.

Over the last three weeks, I have visited classes in almost every department of the high school: English, math, science, PE, visual art, theater, as well as making visits to lunchtime and after-school activities, sports events, and competitions. There is certainly an incredible amount of things happening here at CAC!

However, quantity of experiences is not necessarily an indicator of quality. While I often comment on the amount and variety of things happening here, it is the quality of those experiences that truly impresses me. The incredible diversity of lessons, ways of thinking, learning engagements, assessments, and expectations that the students journey through each day on campus is what makes the CAC experience so rich and engaging.

You will be aware by now that April 20 has been declared a national holiday and CAC will be closed on this day. This brings the final day of school for the IBDP students forward to April 19. However, the teachers’ careful planning of their courses will mean this last minute shift will not disrupt the learning. The change does add to the rather choppy feel that we are already experiencing in April. However, teachers are thoughtfully planning and our students are adaptable; when we return after the Eid break in May it will be heads down and fully focused on preparing for the end of semester exams. On that note, I have included a few images below to remind you (and your students) of some effective study habits and how to ensure there is a suitable space dedicated to study at home.

In the meantime, I’ll take this opportunity to wish you a wonderful long weekend, and another happy Easter!
