CACMUN 41
The annual CAC Model United Nations conference began this morning with opening speeches, followed by intense lobbying, and an inspiring opening ceremony. Over 300 students from fourteen schools are participating. The conference continues through on campus through Saturday.
Communications Survey
The Advancement Office is asking parents to fill out a short survey about how communication is retrieved or received from CAC. Please help us gather this important information by filling out the 5min survey here.
Upcoming Progress Report and Athletic Eligibility Determination
Mid-semester narrative progress reports will be available on Sunday at 4:00 pm. Please be aware that this progress report represents the grades to date at the half-way mark of the semester. All students will be provided with narrative feedback on this progress report, which we hope you as parents find helpful. This progress report is used to determine athletic/activity eligibility and academic probation. It is very important that any students with outstanding work submit it well before the progress report is posted. Once the grades are posted they will not be adjusted, and students who find themselves ineligible will be unable to continue participating in activities or travel in upcoming tournaments.
Skyward Gradebook
The gradebook section of Family Access on Skyward allows students and parents to view student progress. With progress reports coming up, Skyward will be open through the weekend until Sunday at 8:00 am.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
The High School Parent-Teacher Conference Days are an excellent opportunity to visit campus and meet with teachers to discuss your student’s academic progress. Conferences will take place on Monday, October 21 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Tuesday, October 22 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. As noted above, mid-semester progress reports will be posted on Sunday, October 20.
On October 21, conferences will be “arena style” in the High School Gym. No appointments are needed and conferences are limited to quick “check ins” that do not require confidentiality. On October 22, conferences will be in teachers’ classrooms. Appointments will be made in fifteen-minute intervals. For both types of conferences, students are encouraged to attend with parents.
Please note that MS/HS cross-over teachers will ONLY be available at the drop-in conferences on Monday, October 21. Cross-over teachers are Mr. Alexander Dzamashvili, Mr. Ian McCuaig, and Mr. Mick Barens.
There will be no school for High School students on Tuesday, October 22.
If a teacher’s schedule is fully booked for Tuesday’s conferences, kindly email that teacher directly to schedule a conference at another time and date. Also, if you won’t be available on the parent-teacher conference day, but want to visit specific teachers, please contact each teacher directly. Instructions for the signup were sent on October 10 and can be found here.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Eman Hamza in the High School Office at ehamza@cacegypt.org or 2755-5403.

Open Call for StoryFest Participants
On December 10-12, CAC will inaugurate StoryFest, a celebration of storytelling and stories in all their myriad forms. Our community will welcome professional storytellers, authors, photographers, musicians, and more to share a variety of performances and workshops with students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni over three afternoons.
Recognizing that our community is full of diversity and talent, StoryFest invites you to participate in a number of ways beyond simply attending the event:
● Perform or lead a workshop in any mode of storytelling you can imagine (music, spoken-word, drama, visual, etc.), in whatever language you speak.
● Read a story or poem at the StorySLAM or PoetrySLAM events.
● Participate in the Flash Fiction contest.
● Record a reminiscence about CAC in the sound booth. Stories are being collected for CAC’s upcoming 75th anniversary!
We aspire for this event to involve a diversity of voices, reflecting our community’s internationalism. If you are interested in any of the above, please contact Noah Balazs at nbalazs@cacegypt.org.

Freshman Seminar
This week in Freshman Seminar students learned about upcoming
university visits to CAC and how they can best engage with representatives
to get answers to their questions about their higher education plans. Parents, please
discuss the importance of taking advantage of these visits with your students.
All Students and Parents,
Next week we are hosting two major events for universities at CAC. Some information has been sent already, but we wanted to give you the most recent updates.
Sunday, 20 Oct 2019 – University of Chicago
This Sunday evening at 6:00 pm we have a special opportunity for you at CAC. Mr. James Nondorf, Dean of Admissions at the University of Chicago, will be speaking with students and parents about the admission process at Highly Selective American universities. He is visiting Cairo on behalf of the US State Department and the Office of Overseas Schools. In addition to his career in Chicago he has also worked at Yale University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He brings tremendous experience and insight into the application process. His advice will be invaluable for students who are planning to apply to American universities.
If you or any of your students would like to attend, please complete this RSVP Form. The event will take place in the MS Auditorium from 6:00-7:00 pm.

Thursday, 24 Oct 2019 – Annual University Fair
Each year CAC joins with 7 other international high school in Cairo to host a series of university fairs on our campuses. This year the CAC Fair will be in the afternoon on Thursday, 24 Oct 2019. The fair will be at the end of the school day in the HS Gym. To make sure that students have time to speak with the universities, the schedule for classes on that day will be a modified assembly schedule. That schedule is below.
School is not dismissed after the final block. After G Block students will walk with their teachers to the HS Gym.
We currently have more than 115 universities confirmed, so this will be the largest university fair in CAC’s history! If you would like to see who is coming, you can find the full list here:

Visit by Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth – 29th & 30th October
On 29th and 30th October, CAC will be visited by Mr. Luke Kasim, the Director of Recruitment for Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY). CTY is a leading U.S. center for academically talented students and offers a range of summer and online courses and opportunities for highly able students from grades 2 to 12. On 29th October at 6:30pm Mr. Kasim will deliver a presentation in the CAC Theater to all interested parents. This presentation is open to anyone, but those from outside the CAC community will need to register at the link. CAC parents can just come along. For more information, see the event flyer.
On 30th October, Mr. Kasim will be based in the MS Conference Room and will be available for individual meetings with parents where he can answer questions or discuss options for individual students. To book a time with Mr. Kasim, please use this form. If you are unable to make an individual appointment, or if you just have a general question, there will be two open drop-in times during the day:
11:00 – 12:00pm
3:00 – 4:00pm
If you have any questions about the CTY visit, please email Selena Gallagher: sgallagher@cacegypt.org.

Girl Scouts Leaders Wanted
There are four ninth graders who would like to continue their Girl Scouts careers. We need leaders to guide them. Please consider volunteering to lead this troop for the year. Girl Scouts at this level can lead their own meetings and projects, but they will need a liaison with the Cairo Council of leaders and with the USAGSO organization. Please email Sara Torosian, cairogirlscouts@usagso.org, if you would be interested in leading these girls. It’s an extremely rewarding experience; you will not regret it!
