Peace Day Assembly

Peace Day Assembly

We enjoyed a fantastic celebration assembly in recognition of the UN designated International Day of Peace earlier this week. Student groups collaborated to create different contributions to mark this day. We enjoyed musical performances from the MS/HS band, Choir and Strings Ensemble and a movement-based theater piece that explored some of the themes behind the day. One of our Student Council Executive committee members spoke eloquently to the students about our roles and responsibility as a community in creating a peaceful and harmonious school environment. Outside, a peace themed collaborative art installation, coordinated by the National Art Honors Society, decorated the entrance to campus.

Luca Martinez meets HS students

CAC Speaker Series

Also this week, the HS community gathered to listen to our first guest speaker of the year, Luca Martinez. Luca spoke to students about his work to highlight and celebrate the natural environment of the threatened wetland areas in Florida. His multi-media approach was deeping engaging and his wisdom and unassuming, genuine passion for what he does was truly inspiring for our students.

This weekend, CAC athletes are in Europe to represent the school by competing in this sports tournament. Our Soccer and Volleyball team will play through the weekend and wish them all the very best of luck. Go Eagles!

Week of September 26, 2024

Grade 9: Freshman Seminar Update:

This week, our high school librarian, Meghan Ennis, led an engaging session on academic honesty with the students. Ms. Ennis discussed the ethical use of AI as a research tool and emphasized the importance of avoiding plagiarism while guiding the students on proper citation methods. She also encouraged all students to utilize the library’s resources to enhance their research skills. We are confident that this session has provided valuable insights that will help our students uphold academic integrity throughout their high school journey.

Grade 11: PSAT for students coming up. CAC will administer the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, better known as the PSAT, on Monday, October 7th, to all 11th-grade students. The test will take place at the beginning of the day and will be two hours long (for those taking it without extended time). Why is this an important exam for students?
1. Taking the PSAT is good practice for standardized exams that may be required for university admission.
2. Student assessments are also used to provide school-wide data on student performance over time and for comparative purposes.
3. For US Citizens in 11th grade, the PSAT is a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

More information about timing, locations, and other important details will be sent out as we near the testing date. This test will be given electronically, so students need to have Bluebook installed and updated on their computers. If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Petrich.

Grade 12: Class of 2025: Seniors have been reminded to submit their Counselor Brag sheet (we use this to write their letter of recommendation if needed) by Oct. 1st. Also, they should schedule their individual meeting with their counselor by Oct. 3rd. We also host drop in help sessions for them to work on essays and their applications ongoing this fall at lunch time: the schedule is here. They can also schedule additional appointments with their counselor to discuss college applications throughout the fall.

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

I’m writing today’s article while standing on the high school field, watching our student community gather for the final dress-up competition of Spirit Week. It’s wonderful to see their positive and creative energy, collaborative team spirit, and general enthusiasm. Spirit Week is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate not just school spirit, but also that elusive concept of school community. By working together in their teams and grade levels, and engaging in healthy competition, the sense of camaraderie and belonging is noticeably strengthened throughout the week.

Yes, it creates a little disruption and chaos, but here at the high school, we believe that the positive outcomes for our students far outweigh the minor interruptions these Spirit Week events may cause. We remain committed to our mission statement: learn, explore, and have fun. Spirit Week is a wonderful embodiment of these three words. I hope you enjoy the photos of the week’s activities.

Thank you also to our fabulous Booster Club for providing some much needed refreshments at the end of the day today as we wrapped up Spirit Week. If you are interested in volunteering for the Booster Club, you can reach out to them using this email: boosterclub@cacegypt.org.

Next week, we look forward to more engaging events for our students. On Sunday, we will celebrate and recognize the UN International Day of Peace, coming together as a student community for an assembly to reflect on this important global theme. Following closely on the heels of Peace Day, we will welcome our first guest speaker of the year for the CAC Signature Program Speaker Series. Luca Martinez, an environmental sustainability activist, uses film and video to communicate his powerful message about the environment. Luca will give a presentation to the high school community and engage in small group work with selected classes.

Thank you to our wonderful group of Senior Parents who organized a sunrise breakfast event for the Grade 12 class this week. It was heartening to see parents celebrating this special event with their students.

Despite all the fun and engaging activities, there continues to be a serious focus on learning in the high school. Over the coming few weeks you will begin to see assessments picking up as teacher work to gauge the knowledge and understanding of the students at this stage in the year. Quarter 1 will end on October 17 with Progress Reports being issued soon after students return for the WWW experiences. We will host parent-teacher conferences on November 5-6.

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Ms Bean presents at Senior College Night

Excitement is in the air as our annual Spirit Week approaches! With daily themed activities and events taking place next week, students will have the chance to bond and create lasting memories together. We look forward to seeing friendly, positive competition between grades and school pride appropriately on display. We encourage all students to get involved and make this a memorable celebration of our school spirit!

Spirit Week is all about fostering a strong sense of community and belonging within our school. Through various fun and engaging activities, students will explore how school spirit can unite us, build lasting connections, and create a positive, inclusive environment. By focusing on teamwork, kindness, and school pride, we aim to strengthen the bonds between students, helping everyone feel valued and supported. Spirit Week is not just about competition—it’s about coming together as one community.

Service Fair 2024

On Wednesday this week, we hosted the annual Service Fair here on campus. I extend my gratitude to our service learning coordinator, Ereeny Gawdat, for organizing this event. It’s inspiring to witness local NGOs, entrepreneurs and businesses prioritize service-oriented and sustainable practices in their operations.

It was also great to welcome a large turnout of parents at our first HS parent coffee morning this week. For those who couldn’t attend or anyone who wants a recap, you can find the slides used during the event here. Our Next Coffee morning will take place on October 2.

Back to School Night

Back to School Night (BTSN)

We were happy and excited to see so many parents in attendance at last night’s BTSN event. It was great to see parents taking advantage of the opportunity to establish a productive partnership with teachers this year. We hope that the event was informative and interesting and we welcome any feedback you have to share. Don’t forget to access your child’s Google Classroom to download Course Outlines. Alternatively, you can always email the teacher to ask for a copy.

High School Parent Coffee – Wed 11 Sept, 9:30 a.m. HS Meeting Room

Next week, there is another opportunity to further develop the partnership between yourselves and us here at school. We are looking forward to welcoming you to the first HS Parent Coffee of the year on Wednesday. We will present a general overview of the big picture of learning and programs at CAC as well as discussing the importance of parent partnership, emphasizing ways that parents can be engaged and involved in their child’s high school experience. We will also introduce our homeroom and counseling programs and showcase some things that are coming up this year to look forward to. Of course, there will also be time to socialize with other parents and ask the HS admin team and counselors questions. I hope you will be able to join us.

Grade 9 Seminar held this week: The first grade 9 seminar was held this week with freshmen and counselors. It covered a wide range of important topics aimed at helping our students navigate their high school experience. Students were encouraged to explore new clubs, activities, and sports, regardless of their proficiency, as we believe in the value of trying new things. We also provided insights into managing anxiety and minimizing stress as they transition into high school, particularly for those who may be entering a new school environment.

Additionally, the seminar offered practical tips on staying organized using Google Calendar and leveraging the chat function on Google for effective communication with teachers and school counselors. We hope this information proves valuable as our students embark on this exciting journey. Ask them to show you their Class of 2028 Assessment Calendar!

New shaded space on campus for students

In the Theatre Making class

In Science class

One week of learning done! During the first full week of school, it has been great to see students back on campus. They bring a lively energy that we all miss when only adults are present! This week has been spent establishing routines and expectations as well as learning about course syllabi and getting to know each other. The enthusiasm levels have been high and we are all excited to get the year up and running.

Football Tryouts

It was wonderful to see so many students come out to the tryouts yesterday and today despite the hot weather. More than 230 students came out yesterday, and watching them practice on the fields, track and in the gym was a fantastic reminder of what makes our CAC sports program so dynamic.

A major event taking place for parents next week is the High School Back to School Night (Wednesday 4 Sept, 4:15 – 7:00 p.m.). Back to School Night is an opportunity to meet all of your child’s teachers, counselors and other faculty to learn more about the academic program, courses studied and HS support structures this year. I hope you will be able to join us at this important first event of the year.

With the busy first week over, students are tired and the weekend is welcome. I wish you all a safe, relaxing weekend.

From the PTO

We’ve all completed the first full week of school! Great work getting off to a great start, everyone!
In the beginning of the year, so much of the focus in classrooms and on campus is centered on creating community. One way PTO helps foster community is by providing a number of informal WhatsApp chats to help parents connect. Please remember that these are not channels for official communication from the school.
There are broad groups for each division (Elementary, Middle, and High School) as well as grade-level groups and for elementary there are classroom groups as well. It is useful to be a part of each of the relevant groups because they each serve a different role in communicating with the community.

Broad announcements and questions that pertain to the whole division are appropriate on the ES, MS, and HS chats. When PTO is hosting events where the whole community is invited, we will share that information through the blog and the division level groups.

If you are looking to promote a community event, we appreciate you following the same guidelines. If you need help posting in one of our Admin-only groups you’re welcome to text any of the admins to forward your message. This way the grade level and classroom groups avoid being clogged up by repetitive messages and their conversations can stay focused on topics specific to the particular grade or class.
If you would need a link to one of the WhatsApp groups, please email CACPTOoc@cacegypt.org with your phone number and our Outreach Coordinator will get you connected.

We are delighted to invite both new and returning parents to a relaxed and informal Coffee Morning this Sunday, September 1st at 8:30 in the PTO Lounge on the first floor of the Admin building. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with other parents, meet the PTO team, and learn more about our upcoming events. We hope you can join us for a cup of coffee and some light refreshments. It’s a great chance to get to know each other better and discuss the exciting year ahead. We look forward to seeing you there!

Highro Glyphics Newsletter Week of August 22, 2024

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Welcome to the beginning of the 2024-25 school year, and to the inaugural edition of this year’s Highro-Glyphics weekly newsletter. I will be sending a newsletter every week on Thursday highlighting campus events, showcasing learning and celebrating the full life of the high school. Thank you for taking the time to read.

The year has started off on a positive note, and the sense of energy from the initial days on campus is still palpable. The return of students with refreshed faces after the break is a wonderful sight. Over the next few days, the academic routines will fall into place, with students having attended all their classes, met their teachers, and gotten a grasp of what their courses will entail for the upcoming year (or two years for the IB students). Add/Drop is in progress and we anticipate all student schedules settling down next week.

New Families Orientation

We are happy to welcome more than 60 new families to our community this year bringing our student numbers in the high school above 400! Our enthusiastic Student Ambassadors extended warm CAC greetings to the new arrivals, first during the New Family Orientation on Monday and on through the first few days of school. The orientation on Monday was a nice opportunity to connect with new families and extend our community’s welcome. The returning CAC students and other members of the community are all working collaboratively to make our newcomers feel at ease.

I’d like to extend a warm welcome also to our new faculty members who have joined the HS team. I am pleased to introduce 12 new accomplished and dedicated educators hailing from various parts of the world:

Ms. Megan Berkle – Science / Biology
Mr. Philippe Saratsiotis – Math
Mr. Paul Skadsen – Math
Mr. Josh Henderson – English
Ms. Rebecca Daley – English
Dr. Noah Billig – Social Studies
Mr. Anthony Loveday – Social Studies
Mme. Dalal El Madade – French
Ms. Maia Bassett – Digital Arts / Yearbook
Ms. Mirian Kotzikas – English Language Learning
Ms. Staci Petrich – Counseling
Dr. Theron Mott – Dir. of Teaching and Learning

Mobile Device Expectations for 24-25

We are introducing new mobile device expectations in the high school this year to support our students’ academic success and well-being. Research has consistently shown that unrestricted use of mobile devices in schools can significantly hinder focus, reduce academic performance, and negatively impact students’ mental and emotional health. As such, we are limiting device use during the school day. Specifically, no mobile devices may be used in the classrooms during learning times. Devices will need to be stored in students’ bags or in the storage space provided in every classroom.

By limiting device use in this way, we aim to foster a learning environment that prioritizes education and encourages meaningful interactions. We ask for your support in reinforcing these expectations at home by discussing the policy with your child and avoiding non-urgent communication during school hours. In case of emergencies, please contact the school office directly rather than calling / texting your child.

Together, we can help create a focused and productive learning atmosphere where all students can thrive. Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Week Without Walls Updates

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Well, here we are at the end of the year! And what a year it has been. I would like to go back and identify some highlights of the year, but when I started to scroll back through the calendar, I realized there were just too many different events and happenings for me to be able to identify one or two special highlights. And so, rather than unduly shining a spotlight on one or two things, I will instead take this opportunity to say thank you and well done to each and every one of our community members. Especially, a huge thank you to our dedicated high school faculty and staff who have facilitated a wonderful educational experience for your children this year. A huge congratulations to all our students for successfully completing the school year with all its highs and lows, and bumps in between. High school can be a challenging time, and I’m consistently impressed by our students’ fortitude, resilience, and good spirit. They are a credit to you all as parents. We are proud and happy to be in partnership with you in the education of your child here at CAC.

At this time, I would like to say a special thank you to those colleagues from the high school faculty who will be departing and heading to other locations this year. This year, the departing teachers are:

Mr. Erik Dunham
Ms. Ashley Gramolini
Ms. Paulette Smith
Ms. Erica Minix
Ms. Narmien Deeb

We are deeply thankful for their years of service here at CAC and wish them well in their new locations and adventures scattered around the globe. In addition to the five above, three members of HS faculty will be retiring this year:
Dr. Heba Farouk
Mr. Jonathan Bryans
Dr. Maya Williamson

A special congratulations must go to these three retiring teachers who between them, have contributed 57 years of service to CAC!

Celebrating Dr. Farouk, Mr. Bryans and Dr. Williamson on their retirement!

I would also like to take a moment to wish all our departing students and families the very best of luck with their transfers and moves to new locations. The life of an international school has a somewhat transient feel to it at times, and while this is a defining feature, it can also be challenging for those who are leaving and those who are left behind. To all those who are leaving this year, please know that your contributions to our community are valued and we will miss each and every one of you. Good luck with your next steps.

And with that said, we can now turn our attention to the holiday—precious family time, a chance to relax and unwind, and time for some reflection about the year. We look forward to welcoming you back for the 2024–2025 school year on August 19th. Until then, please enjoy some rest, relaxation, and family time. Travel safe and take care.

Kind regards,
Andrew Buckman

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Last Friday, we held a fantastic graduation ceremony once again at the pyramids. This marked the 76th year that CAC has held its graduation ceremony at this iconic location. Even after all this time, the majesty of the event has not faded—it truly is a fittingly impressive location to celebrate the graduation of such an impressive group of students. We are very proud indeed of our seniors and we wish the Class of ’24 good luck as they embark on their educational journeys beyond CAC.

Back on campus, exams got started today and have been progressing as expected. Students in grades 9 to 11 are demonstrating their learning from the last semester and will continue to do so through the rest of this week. For most students, Thursday will be the last formal day of exams with the following Sunday (9th) being set aside for students who missed exams or had conflicts in their schedule to make up exams on a case-by-case basis. Monday 10th is the last day of school for everyone with attendance expected for all.

On this last day, students will cycle through all of their classes to receive their semester two exam grades, and receive feedback on their exam performance as well as final closing activities in non-exam classes. The day ends with a celebratory assembly where we bid farewell to departing faculty and students. This formal closure to the end of the year is highly beneficial for all students and we eagerly await the presence of everyone on Monday. Dismissal is scheduled for 11:30 on that final day of school.

In the meantime, here’s hoping your child’s exams are going well and they are managing to balance the heavy academic demands of studying for and taking exams with some relaxation and recharging in between. The holiday will soon be upon us all!

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Open air music concerts all week

You can tell the end of the year is approaching by the number of culminating celebratory events taking place at the high school recently.

This week, our music students have been hosting outdoor performances every lunchtime to entertain the crowd. We also had a fantastic concert on Monday evening, showcasing the combined talents of the choir, band, and strings ensemble. As always, the caliber of the work was fantastic; the student performances were of excellent quality and very enjoyable. Well done to the musicians, Mr McCuig and Mr. Alex for their hard work in preparing these performances.

Art students at the Empower Her art exhibition

Our students were lucky this week to be taken to the ‘Empower Her Art Forum’ Exhibition. This exhibition of international artwork presented them with a wonderful opportunity to meet artists, discuss their work, and learn more about how art can be used to promote positive images and messages to the wider community. A huge thank you to Ms Isabel Torres, who was involved in the exhibition as an artist and curator, and who empowered our students by taking them along for this experience.

Our student athletes are once again out on the road, representing CAC in international sports tournaments in Europe. The tennis, track & field, and golf teams are all competing in the spring ISAA tournament right now. As ever, we’re proud of their achievements so far and wish them the best of luck. Go Eagles!

Our newest grade level of students, grade 8, who will be next year’s grade 9, visited the high school this week for an information session hosted by teachers and counselors. In addition, current grade 9 students formed a panel of experts to whom the eighth graders could ask their questions. It’s always an exciting time when we welcome the newest cohort of students, and we look forward to working with them and getting to know them in August.

CAC Prom 2024 – Enchanted Garden

Another significant event signifying the close of the school year is, of course, prom. Students enjoyed dancing and celebrating together, reflecting on the year and looking ahead to their bright futures. Although the music was loud for older ears of the teacher chaperones, the students all had a fantastic time and were highly appreciative of the hard work by the student council and supervisors in providing this experience.

WWW Placements will be finalized in the next week. Students will receive their assignments by email; they will submit their verification forms to the HS Office. For students who are traveling internationally, students will also submit proof of deposit payment (USD 1000) and a copy of the traveling passport in addition to the verification form. Assignments will be made by Wednesday May 28; Forms and deposits will be due by June 2nd.

RAFT Leavers Lunch

This past Tuesday, we hosted the RAFT (Reconciliation, Affirmation, Farewell, and Think Destination) Leavers Lunch for students who are departing CAC at the end of the year. Students joined a special lunch meeting with our counselors to say farewell, receive a parting gift, and discuss their upcoming transitions to new communities.

Withdrawing students are reminded to please have the green withdrawal form signed by all teachers and turned in by the last day of school, June 10.

Studying for Semester Exams

We’ve collected and posted a selection of essential resources designed to help students master time management, prioritize tasks, and maintain focus and motivation. Students can find these valuable tools in their Google Classroom, including our comprehensive Study Planner Pack, effective retrieval practice techniques, and practical spaced practice strategies.

Seniors. Seniors received pink checkout forms to start the process of gathering signatures for completing end-of-year tasks. To obtain a signature from the counseling department, students must complete two requirements: first, fill out a Google Form indicating their college matriculation plans and where they wish their final transcript sent; second, ensure their Maia Learning profiles are updated with accurate information regarding their college application decisions.

Hope Run Update

A huge thank you to all who supported the Hope Run event on February 23rd at the Wadi Degla. We had an amazing turn out of more than 150 runners, of all ages, making it a really memorable community event, while raising funds for the Health and Hope Oasis organization in Cairo. A grand total of EGP 115,415.12 (USD $2,406.93) was raised and donated towards the building of a running track at their center as part of the rehabilitation of the children they support who are recovering from cancer treatments.

We’d also like to give a shout out once again to our sponsors: Gold’s Gym, CAC’s Booster Club, Halo, OWN, Fyngan, Lamar, Green Cola and the Sally Mussetter Grant for their generosity and support making the event such a success.

If you would like to offer further support to the Hope and Health Oasis, please reach out to hoperun20@gmail.com
