CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Congratulations Class of 2025!

Well, here we are at the end of the year! And what a year it has been. I would like to go back and identify some highlights of the year, but when I started to scroll back through the calendar, I realized there were just too many different events and happenings for me to be able to identify one or two special highlights.

And so, rather than unduly shining a spotlight on one or two things, I will instead take this opportunity to say thank you and well done to each and every one of our community members. Especially, a huge thank you to our dedicated high school faculty and staff who have facilitated a wonderful educational experience for your children this year. A huge congratulations to all our students for successfully completing the school year with all its highs and lows, and bumps in between. High school can be a challenging time, and I’m consistently impressed by our students’ fortitude, resilience, and good spirit. They are a credit to you all as parents. We are proud and happy to be in partnership with you in the education of your child here at CAC.

I would like to say a special thank you to those colleagues from the high school who will be departing and heading to other locations this year. This year, the departing teachers are:

Ms. Mirian Kotzikas – ELL
Mr. Chris Broad – Disruptive Innovation and Technology
Dr. Kurt Gutschick – Social Studies
Mr. Kyle Moore – Math
Mr. Emad El Shabrawy – Arabic

In addition to these wonderful faculty, we are also saying goodbye to the High School Assistant Principal, Ms. Rachel McCall. Rachel has dedicated 6 years of service to CAC and has worked closely with many of our families. Rachel is moving into the role of HS Principal at the American School in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and we wish her all the best in this transition.

I would also like to take a moment to wish all our departing students and families the very best of luck with their transfers and moves to new locations. The life of an international school has a somewhat transient feel to it at times, and while this is a defining feature, it can also be challenging for those who are leaving and those who are left behind. To all those who are leaving this year, please know that your contributions to our community are valued and we will miss each and every one of you. Good luck with your next steps.

And with that said, we can now turn our attention to the holiday—precious family time, a chance to relax and unwind, and time for some reflection about the year. We look forward to welcoming you back for the 2025–2026 school year on August 18th. Until then, please enjoy some rest, relaxation, and family time. Travel safe and take care.

Kind regards,
Andrew Buckman

ACTIVITIES

Week Without Walls (WWW) – February 2026

Earlier this week, all High School students and families received an email update about Week Without Walls (WWW). Next school year, WWW will take place during the week of February 8–12, 2026.

While full details will be shared in August and September, families are encouraged to begin thinking ahead over the summer — especially if your child may join an international course.

Summer Prep Checklist:

• Check passport validity: Passports must be valid through at least August 13, 2026 (6 months after the latest WWW trip returns in February). If a renewal is needed, summer is the ideal time.

• Start the conversation: Discuss whether international travel is a good fit for your child and family. This will help guide your decisions when course options are released in the fall.

Coming in the Fall:

• Full list of WWW course options, including both international and in-Egypt experiences
• Information on costs, timelines, and how to register
• A coordinated communication plan so all families get the same information at the same time

Reminder: Middle School PRIME trips continue to take place separately in October.

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Last Friday, we held a fantastic graduation ceremony once again at the pyramids. This marked the 77th graduation year for CAC. Even after all this time, the majesty of the event has not faded—it truly is a fittingly impressive location to celebrate the graduation of such an impressive group of students. We are very proud of our seniors and we wish the Class of ’25 all the very best as they embark on their educational journeys beyond CAC.

Back on campus, exams are approaching their final couple of days. For most students, tomorrow (Monday 2 June) will be the last formal day of exams with the following Tuesday (3rd) being set aside for students who missed exams or had conflicts in their schedule to make up exams on a case-by-case basis. Wednesday 4th June is the last day of school for everyone, with attendance expected for all.

On this last day, students will cycle through all of their classes to receive their semester two exam grades, and receive feedback on their exam performance as well as final closing activities in non-exam classes. The day begins and ends with celebratory assemblies where we bid farewell to departing faculty and students. This formal closure to the end of the year is highly beneficial for all students and we eagerly await the presence of everyone on Tuesday. Dismissal is scheduled for 11:30 on that final day of school.

In the meantime, here’s hoping your child’s exams are going well and they are managing to balance the heavy academic demands of studying for and taking exams with some relaxation and recharging in between. The holiday will soon be upon us all!

Upcoming dates:

2 June – exams continue to Grade 9-11
3 June – Make up exams day
4 June – Last day of school for all students. 11:30 dismissal.

From the MS/HS Library

Dear High School Students, Parents and Guardians,

As we approach the end of the school year, we want to remind you that all library and HS materials, including English books, were due back by Sunday, May 18th. HS Textbooks were due back by May 29th.

All books should be returned to the MHS Library and not directly to teachers.

If your child has overdue materials, you will have been receiving weekly email notices listing the specific items that need to be returned. As the deadline approaches, these notices will become daily reminders. Please review these emails carefully—they include a full list of any outstanding items.

If any books have been lost, please contact the librarians directly to request an invoice. You will then take the invoice to the CAC cashier, make the payment, and return the stamped receipt to the library as proof of payment. Only once we have received this receipt will your child’s account be cleared.

Please note that if materials were not returned or paid for by May 29th, your Skyward account will be blocked. This means:

• You will not be able to access your child’s report card at the end of the school year.
• If the account remains blocked into the summer, you will not be able to access student schedules at the start of the next school year.

We strongly encourage you to take action now to avoid any disruption. If you have questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us by email.

Thank you for your cooperation and support!

Warm regards,

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

HS Recognition Night

You can tell the end of the year is approaching by the number of culminating celebratory events taking place at the high school recently. Most significantly, today was the last day of school for our seniors—always a day of mixed emotions and great celebrations. The next steps are the exams next week for those who need to sit them, followed by Graduation at the Pyramids on Friday! Just ahead of that, our Class of 2025 will parade around the school campus on Thursday 29 May at 12:00 pm. This is the much anticipated Senior Cap and Gown Walk. Please feel welcome to join us at school for this wonderful event next week.

Spring Arts Festival

This week, our music students have been hosting outdoor performances during lunchtime to entertain the crowd. We also enjoyed a fantastic Spring Festival on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, showcasing the combined talents of tour arts students. As always, the caliber of the work was fantastic; the student work is of exceptional quality and the performances and video presentations highly enjoyable. Well done to the students and huge thanks to the arts team for their hard work in preparing the students for this festival.

ISAA Tournament Eagles Squad!

Our student athletes are once again out on the road, representing CAC in international sports tournaments in Europe. The tennis, track & field, and golf teams are all competing in the spring ISAA tournament right now. As ever, we’re proud of their achievements so far and wish them the best of luck in the tournament. Go Eagles!

Our newest grade level of students, grade 8, who will be next year’s grade 9, will visit the high school next week for an information session hosted by teachers and counselors. It’s always an exciting time when we welcome the newest cohort of students, and we look forward to working with them and getting to know them in August.

Another significant event signifying the close of the school year is, of course, prom. Students will enjoy dancing and celebrating together this weekend, reflecting on the year and looking ahead to their bright futures. We are all highly appreciative of the hard work of the student council and supervisors in providing this opportunity.

Upcoming dates:

22 May – Last day of school for all Seniors
23 May – HS Prom

Counseling Department Announcements

Week of May 22, 2025

Grade 12- Counselors have reminded seniors to update Maia Learning with their university decisions. Graduation transcripts will be available starting June 4th, and we will send the final transcript to the destination seniors indicated on the survey we had sent to them. We have their senior packet (items from their cumulative file that can be returned to them) and health forms for them to pick up as part of their senior check out process starting this week. We also have some transition to university information we will pass on to them when they come by to pick up their packets. We look forward to seeing them at graduation practice next week!

Grade 9- This week’s Grade 9 seminar focused on helping students reflect on their extracurricular and co-curricular experiences in high school so far, and begin thinking about how to capture those experiences in a meaningful way. Whether through a personal activity log, a resume, or a simple reflection document, students were encouraged to take note of the activities that have shaped their first year of high school. The session also emphasized forward thinking—encouraging students to identify interests they want to lean into or new opportunities they may want to explore in Grade 10. Whether continuing with a sport, club, service project, or trying something completely new, the goal is to be intentional about growth, curiosity, and building a well-rounded high school experience.

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Today’s IB Math Exam

The final week of school before exams is always tough for students. Preparation for exams has to be balanced with completing final tasks and wrapping up the courses. It’s great to see our students approaching this time with dedication and maturity, working hard to study and focusing on their final lessons before the exams begin next week.

The semester two exams will give our students a chance to showcase what they’ve learned this semester. While exams are important, they are just one way we assess students at CAC. Throughout the semester, students have completed many varied tasks and assessments that show their knowledge and skills in different ways. Teachers use all this information to calculate the final semester two grades, with the semester exam added at the end for a complete picture. If you have any questions or concerns, it’s never too late to talk to your child’s teacher about how to support their learning.

Please check my previous newsletters for tips on helping your child study effectively and keeping an eye on their health and well-being during this potentially challenging and stressful time.

High School Recognition Night and Awards

I am happy to announce that we will host our high school Recognition Night on Sunday 18th May at 6 p.m. in the theater. During this event, students who have been selected for important awards will be honored. The Recognition Night is a chance to celebrate our seniors and other students who have truly excelled in different areas of school life— academics, arts, activities, service and character are all acknowledged and celebrated through the high school awards.

This year, we have made some changes to our award events. On Sunday, during the school day, each grade level will have a special Awards Assembly where students nominated for Subject Area Awards will receive their certificates. Presenting awards in this way allows everyone in the grade to celebrate each others’ success and learn what it takes to demonstrate a sustained commitment to learning. Subject Area Awards are presented to students who demonstrate all or some of these attributes throughout the year of learning in that course:
• Strong academic performance
• Noteworthy effort
• A positive attitude and meaningful contributions to the course
• Passion for the subject
• Creative and critical thinking
• A collaborative and supportive approach
• A commitment to our CAC Core Values

In these assemblies, we will also be recognising the “Top 10 Scholars” in each grade level. These 10 students, through their sustained commitment to hard work, have reached the highest GPAs in the grade.

While not everyone can expect to receive an award at the end of the year, everyone certainly can join in the recognition and celebration. If you would like to join us at the High School Recognition Night to celebrate these hardworking students, you are welcome to come to the theater at 6 p.m. on Sunday 18 May.

Upcoming dates:

18 May – HS Recognition Night 6:00 pm. Theatre.

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

IB Exam

Preparing for Semester Exams

After enjoying a series of refreshing long weekends, we’re now buckling down with our books as we approach the final stretch of this semester. It’s incredible how quickly the school year has flown by! As we near the end, it’s crucial for students to finish strong by gearing up for their semester exams. Crafting a study timetable that carefully balances their time and spreads out their revision is key.

If students find themselves needing assistance with time management or creating a study plan, they’re encouraged to reach out to their counselors or teachers. Throughout high school, we’ve prioritized teaching self-management and time management skills, which prove especially valuable during exam periods.

Effective studying hinges on employing specific strategies. For parents seeking guidance on study strategies, they can find more information through the link provided here.

At the same time, we want to remind everyone that maintaining a sense of well-being is just as important as academic preparation. Exam periods can be stressful, so it’s essential for students to look after their mental and physical health. Getting enough sleep, eating well, taking short breaks, staying active, and connecting with friends or family can all help manage stress and support a balanced approach to studying. If students are feeling overwhelmed, we encourage them to speak with a trusted adult, counselor, or teacher — they’re not alone.

Please check the Morning Announcements for information regarding exam schedules, upcoming SAT/ACT exam sessions, and more important news for the CAC HS Community.

Highro Glyphics Newsletter Week of April 30, 2025

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Today is an unusual day as I write this week’s edition of Highro-glyphics in my very quiet office with the school being closed today. CAC always prioritizes student safety and, therefore, the decision was taken to cancel classes. Today’s IB exams have also been postponed. We understand this may cause inconvenience and appreciate the support and patience of our community as we worked with the IB organization to reschedule the exams.

Enjoy the photos of our high school and middle school students collaborating with students from the African Hope School. This wonderful service project, led by two teachers: Ms Jenny Kramer and Mr. Jorge Villafuerte, has been successfully running for a couple of years. Each week, students from African Hope come to the CAC campus to engage in various activities with our students. This initiative exemplifies how CAC encourages students to be community-minded by sharing their time, energy, and enthusiasm, enabling the students from African Hope School to enjoy activities they might not otherwise have access to.

With this week being shorter than expected, I will keep today’s newsletter brief. There are many exciting events to look forward to in the coming weeks, so please check the highlights at the end of this note to mark your calendar.

We are all looking forward to the long weekend and ahead to welcoming everyone back on campus on Sunday. Regarding the HS calendar days, please note that Sunday will remain an A day as scheduled. Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe during the expected weather today.

Upcoming dates:

1 May – Holiday (no school)
18 May – HS Recognition Night 6:00 pm. Theatre (invitation only).
21 May – Spring Festival Arts Event and Concerts
22 May – Last Day of School for all seniors

Green Team Dunk Tank

It was a big day for our IB seniors today…their last day of school classes! Beginning in two weeks’ time, these seniors will be taking their final IB and AP examinations, beginning on April 28 and continuing through to May 21. IB exams are taken by the majority of our graduating class each year. Students who have enrolled in the full IB Diploma program will sit exams in six different subjects. Those not enrolled in the full DP will still take somewhere between 1-5 IB exams, depending on the individualized program of study each student has created on their pathway to graduation. Whether a student is taking one or six exams, the pressure and hard work is not to be underestimated as each IB exam represents the culmination of two full years of studying material that is in many cases equivalent in rigor to university courses. In addition to the IB exams, many of our students will also sit AP exams this session. We wish all our seniors taking final external exams this year the very best of luck!

Green Team Dunk Tank

We had a great time at lunchtime today, celebrating the last day of school for our seniors with a special teacher dunk tank, sponsored by the high school Green Team. The money raised will go towards environmental and sustainability projects.

Eco Fair 2025

This week, we also enjoyed the annual Eco Fair on Wednesday. Sustainable vendors from the local area showcased various ways businesses can operate with sustainability in mind. We were particularly fascinated by the high school design classes’ composting, worm habitats and recycling projects.

As the weather warms up, we look forward to several long weekends over the next three weeks. This will give our high school students a chance to balance their rigorous academic demands with some rest and relaxation time. As parents, you can support your children during this period by encouraging a balance between academic study, building an early exam revision schedule, and encouraging time for relaxation and other pursuits. Finding this balance and planning ahead by organizing time carefully is an effective way to maintain a healthy approach to your child’s well-being.

Please reach out to us at the school if you have any concerns about your child during this potentially stressful period. Wishing you a wonderful long weekend ahead and a happy Easter to all who celebrate.

IB Visual Art Exhibition

It has been a wonderfully artistic week at CAC! On Monday, we enjoyed the opening of our annual IB Visual Art Exhibition, which is always a fantastic event showcasing student creativity at the end of their rigorous two-year art course. The opening was accompanied by the CAC Strings Ensemble, who performed a selection of pieces to set the tone for the event.

IB Theatre Solo Performances

Additionally, on Monday and Wednesday, our higher-level IB Theatre students performed their solo theatre pieces. These performances represent the culmination of two years of intense study of theatre theory and practice, resulting in thought-provoking and truly impressive performances.

Stay tuned for some upcoming music performances to round out the year in the arts. As always, we love to celebrate the arts and showcase our students’ incredible creativity. A big thank you to all our arts teachers for facilitating these events.

TOK Exhibition

We enjoyed the Grade 11 IB Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Exhibition this week. Our Year One IB students invited parents and community members to campus to view their exhibitions, where they have been exploring knowledge questions in an in-depth and rigorous manner. The presentations were thought-provoking and demonstrated how our students are engaging with important critical thinking through the TOK course.

This week, we also had a group of parents join us for a coffee morning to discuss the important topic of student well-being. The end of the school year, with examinations and final assessments, as well as upcoming transitions and change, can be a high-pressure and somewhat stressful experience for high school students. The coffee morning focused on ways we work to minimize this stress at school and strategies parents can use to help ensure their children remain happy and healthy through the end of the school year. You can view the slides and information shared at the meeting here:

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Volunteering at the Egyptian Food Bank

Well folks, we made it to spring break after a long stretch of learning! This break, which also encompasses the Eid holiday, is well-timed as the weather is starting to warm up. Our students have been working hard, and everyone is ready for a well-earned rest. We encourage our students to take this time to refresh and recharge before rejoining us on the 6th of April for the final part of the school year, heading towards the end of the semester. We’ll be sending out information about end-of-semester arrangements and exams shortly after the break.

In the first week back, we are excited to see several events taking place. Our IB Visual Artists will be inviting the CAC community to the opening of their IB art exhibition—always a highlight of the year. The exhibition showcases the culmination of two years of work and promises to be fantastic. Please join us on Tuesday, the 7th, at 5:30 PM for the opening. We also wish the best of luck to our IB Theatre students, who will be performing their higher-level solo theatre pieces for a select audience that same week. These performances and the art exhibition are the final examination projects for those IB Arts subjects.

Also, just after the break, our Grade 11 IB students will present their Theory of Knowledge Exhibitions on Tuesday, the 8th of April. If you are able to join us and explore these exhibitions of thinking and knowledge, you are most welcome.

As always, our students have been out and about, actively making a positive difference in the lives of others. Recently, student council members presented to Grade 1 students about the concept of community and community service. A short report from one of the council members is included below. Additionally, we have students initiating independent projects and school-based activities to serve our community in various ways. Enjoy the photos of our students taking action to make the world around us a better place.

There is always much to look forward to at CAC. I want to reiterate my message that everyone should take a well-earned rest and time to relax next week.

Enjoy the holiday, and Eid Mubarak!

STUCO present to Grade 1

On Wednesday, the high school student council was asked to give a small presentation to the first grade class about service. With the help of four of our student council members, from both the executive and class councils, we gave an overview of what service was and how the student council and other clubs do service. We did this by introducing what communities are, what service is, how service is being done in the high school, and examples of how they can do service in their everyday lives. Through an interactive presentation, this goal was achieved and the children were eager and shared some of their experiences and questions. Overall, it was a great experience and the kids were a fantastic audience. (Yvonne Chi, Grade 11)

1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) 2. College Scholarship Service Profile (CSS Profile) 3. International Student Financial Aid Form (ISFAA)
4. Jenny Kent and Jeff Levy University List based on financial aid for domestic and international students The ISFAA is particularly important for international students as it helps assess eligibility for institutional financial aid. This application is free and available in a paper format for download from the websites of the respective institutions.

We recommend taking the time to review these tools to better understand your options for financial assistance in the college admissions process.

Meetings will be held in the HS Meeting Room at 12 noon. The next date and topic is:

Parent Teacher & Student Conferences

Thank you to those parents who attended the conferences today. This opportunity for partnership with your child’s teachers is very valuable and we appreciate your support. We recognise that not everyone is able to attend conferences on the specific day. Please always feel free to contact teachers to request a meeting if you want to discuss your child’s progress at any time.

Our performing arts students have been out and about representing CAC at some prestigious international events in the last couple of weeks. A small group of HS Choir students travelled to Warsaw for the AMIS Festival. AMIS (Association for Music in International Schools) is an organization dedicated to promoting music education in international schools. AMIS festivals provide students with opportunities to practice and perform under the guidance of renowned conductors, often featuring world-premiere compositions. Thank you to Mr Ian McCuaig who chaperoned this trip.

Last weekend, a group of theatre students travelled to the Czech Republic to join the ISTA Festival there. ISTA (International Schools Theatre Association) focuses on enhancing theatre education for young people in international schools. Its mission is to foster collaboration among students, educators, and artists from diverse backgrounds through theatre experiences. Both of these travel groups return full of enthusiasm and stories about their experiences and we are very proud of their contributions to these events. Thank you to Mr Kasey Semler, Ms Siobhan Buckman and Ms Paula Cornejo who planned and chaperoned this trip.

Counseling Department Announcements

Week of March 20, 2025

Grade 9: This week, the high school counselors conducted a fun session with our 9th graders during freshman seminar, where they took a personality test on Maia Learning. This test uses scientifically-based insights to categorize personalities into 16 possible types and identify common behaviors. The end result means that students can understand themselves a little better so they can explore possible careers that best fits their personality. This test allowed students to list different careers on Maia Learning. Ask your child about their four-letter MBTI (Myers-Briggs) code to learn more about them, and continue the conversation about their futures.

Grade 11: Reminder: Your student has been reminded to schedule the college meeting ASAP if they have not yet done so. Students should stop by our office or email their counselor to set the meeting time (during their flex period) with a parent/s/guardian/s and the counselor to occur by April 23rd.
