CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Varsity Volleyball team off to Paris!

Varsity Boys Soccer Match

It’s been a busy week for our sports teams with several exciting games taking place on campus for the soccer and volleyball teams. Also, last weekend the JV volleyball teams traveled to Alexandria to compete against Schutz American School. This weekend, the varsity volleyball teams are heading to Paris to represent CAC internationally. The cross country team continues dedicated practices, even when those take place at 6 am, like this morning. To come to school and see our campus alive and buzzing with activity that early in the morning (especially considering these are sleepy teenagers!) is a truly impressive site and gets the day off to a fantastic start for them and all of us. Go Eagles!

The HS INJAZ team

Congratulations to our HS INJAZ Team who won first place in the Injaz young entrepreneur competition that took place last weekend. They will now represent Egypt in the regional round in Qatar during the last week of October, competing against teams from 12 other countries. These high school seniors have been working hard together the last few months to bring their project and business plan to fruition. You can see that they have been doing here: https://www.instagram.com/exten.desk/

Grade nine successfully completed their MAP testing in math and reading this week. Results will be available for parents in Skyward shortly. We will send an email with information to Grade 9 parents about this soon.

Don’t forget this weekend is the final deadline for Week Without Walls payments. Please make arrangements with the accounting office to settle this bill if you have not done so already. In order to get prepared, please check your student’s WWW Google Classroom for more information about the individual courses and experiences. Students in need of visas for travel should be actively pursuing those at this point in time. Parent meetings (online) will take place next week. You will receive an invitation via email every soon inviting you to join.

It’s wonderful to have some slightly cooler weather after the heat waves earlier this month. Disruptions to the weather and the chaos and tragedy this has been causing, even very recently in some of our neighboring countries, is concerning and deeply upsetting. We wish all our families well and send best wishes for a safe weekend.

From the PTO

This Tuesday, the PTO had our first bake sale of the year. We were so impressed with the support from our incredible community; both from the volunteers who donated their time and creations and the students, parents, and staff who purchased and enjoyed the goodies. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Our next bake sale will be Tuesday, September 19th after school.

Speaking of after school nibbles, Fresh & Co is offering their menu of drinks and snacks. You’ll find them in the ES Cafeteria Sunday-Wednesday from 2:30-4:00. 10% of the proceeds from those sales benefit the PTO. We are happy to be able to bring this option back to campus and are so grateful for your support.

Our Halloween committees are hard at work already. We extend our thanks to the parents who stepped up to lead the decorations and carnival committees as well as all the volunteers who are committing their time and talents to bring this fun tradition to life. Keep your eyes open for details on how to donate candy or non-food items in support of the fun.

Important dates: The New Parent Felucca will be next Thursday, September 21st. Our next PTO General Meeting will be held Sunday, September 24th at 1:30pm in the PTO lounge.

We want your ideas! Please follow us on Instagram page and join our Facebook Group for announcements and community conversations. All of our programs run on volunteer support and events are organized through committees. If you’d like to see how you can contribute to the community through the PTO, please join our WhatsApp Group.

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Teaching and Learning in the HS

The end of this week marks just over three weeks of learning behind us. It’s evident that our school is fully operational, and everyone has settled into their routines and rhythms. New students and teachers have integrated seamlessly, and learning is well underway for everyone.

Teaching and Learning in the HS

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to check your child’s Skyward gradebook this week. Teachers will have entered early assessment information by now. It’s important to remember that these early assessments provide a snapshot of the ongoing learning process. Whether the grade is good or not-so-good, it represents the student’s initial opportunity to demonstrate their understanding. Throughout the semester, there will be many more chances for them to showcase their progress.

I’d like to commend our athletics coaches for their dedication this week. Despite scorching temperatures, they persevered, even when faced with cancellations due to the heat. Our teams showed remarkable adaptability by finding alternative practice locations, including a creative use of the high school building by the cross country team! They remain committed to working towards their goals. Go Eagles!

This week also featured the Service Fair here on campus. I extend my gratitude to our service learning coordinator, Ereeny Gawdat, for organizing this event. It’s inspiring to witness local entrepreneurs and businesses prioritize service-oriented and sustainable practices in their operations. In connection with this, I’m pleased to announce that CAC’s solar panel project is now contributing a significant percentage of electricity to the campus. While we continue to manage the daily power cuts, it’s reassuring to know that CAC is actively moving towards more sustainable energy consumption practices.

Lastly, it was heartening to see such a large turnout of parents at our first parent coffee morning this week. For those who couldn’t attend or anyone who wants a recap, you can find the slides used during the event here.

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Welcome from the HS Faculty!

Homeroom outside

Students at work in the new Ideation Lab

One week of learning done! During the first week of school, it has been great to see students back on campus. They bring a lively energy that is missing when only adults are present! This week has been spent establishing routines and expectations as well as learning about course syllabi and getting to know each other. The energy levels have been high and we are all excited to get the year up and running.

Soccer Try-outs

The Athletics sign-ups this season have been very positive. More than 220 high school students have expressed interest in joining one of the sports teams this season. Aspiring athletes in soccer, volleyball and cross country have been practicing their skills and showing their positive attitudes towards teamwork and competition. It was wonderful to see so many students come out to the tryouts yesterday and today despite the very hot weather.

Volleyball Try-Outs

On Sunday we will hold an Activities Fair, an event where students can learn about the wide array of co-curricular activities on offer this year. We encourage all high school students to sign up for sports and activities and take the opportunity to get involved in the full life of the school. The benefits for their health, fitness and well-being will be apparent and long lasting.

Two events happening next week for you to put into your agenda are the first Parent Coffee of the year (Tuesday 29, 9:30 a.m.) and the Back to School Night (Wednesday 30, 5:00 – 7:15 p.m.). At the coffee morning we will introduce you to the HS admin and counseling team, as well as a few other faculty members you will need to know through the course of the year. Back to School Night is an opportunity to meet all of your child’s teachers, counselors and others to learn more about the academic program and support structures this year. I hope you will be able to join one or both of these events.

With the busy first week over, students are tired and the weekend is well timed. Enjoy some photos from this week and have a safe, relaxing weekend.

Week Without Walls – Week of October 15
In the next week students will receive invitations to join the Google Classroom for their assigned courses.

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

First Day at School 23-24

Class of 2024

Celebrating Seniors

Welcome to the beginning of the 2023-24 school year, and to the inaugural edition of this year’s Highro-Glyphics weekly newsletter. I will be sending a newsletter every week on Thursday highlighting campus events, showcasing learning and celebrating the full life of the high school. Thank you for taking the time to read.

We observed a solid turnout of students on campus this week, as our Ambassadors extended their greetings to the new arrivals, first during the New Student Orientation and then for the first two days of school. The orientation on Tuesday was a nice opportunity to connect with new parents and extend our community’s welcome. The returning CAC students and other members of the community are all set to make the newcomers feel at ease.

The year has started off on a positive note, and the sense of energy from the initial days on campus is still palpable. The return of students with refreshed faces after the break is a reassuring sight. Over the next few days, the academic routine will fall into place, with students having attended all their classes, met their teachers, and gotten a grasp of what their courses will entail for the upcoming year (or two years for the IB students).

At the onset of this academic year, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to our new students and faculty members who have joined the HS community. We’re joined by 67 new high school students from all around the world, increasing our total student numbers to 377. Additionally, we are pleased to introduce 16 new faculty members, accomplished educators hailing from various parts of the world, who have joined our team:

Todd Schumacher (Design & Engineering)
Peter Yap (Science)
Sheila Yap (Science)
Chris Broad (Disruptive Innovation and Technology)
Monique Puig (Mathematics)
Kyle Moore (Mathematics)
Tim Locher (English)
Jennifer Fiore (English)
Kurt Gutschick (Social Studies)
Narmien Deeb (Social Studies)
Jorge Villafuerte (Future of Finance)
Paula Cornejo (World Languages)
Isabel Torres (Arts)
Siobhan Buckman (Arts)
Pumla Sathula (Physical Education)
Mahmoud Abdel Fattah (Physical Education)

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Well, here we are at the end of the year! And what a year it has been. I would like to go back and identify some highlights of the year, but when I started to scroll back through the calendar, I realized there were just too many different events and happenings for me to be able to identify one or two special highlights. And so, rather than unduly shining a spotlight on one or two things, I will instead take this opportunity to say thank you and well done to each and every one of our community members. Especially, a huge thank you to our dedicated high school faculty and staff who have facilitated a wonderful educational experience for your children this year. A huge congratulations to all our students for successfully completing the school year with all its highs and lows, and bumps in between. High school can be a challenging time, and I’m consistently impressed by our students’ fortitude, resilience, and good spirit. They are a credit to you all as parents. We are proud and happy to be in partnership with you in the education of your child here at CAC.

At this time, I would like to say a special thank you to those colleagues from the high school faculty who will be departing and heading to other locations this year. This year, the departing teachers are:

Mr. David Burton
Mr. Brian Thorburn
Ms. Queen-ie Allinson
Mr. Robert Lazar
Mr. Niall Williams
Ms. Becky Riddle
Mr. Tony Knox
Ms. Dorothy Knox
Mr. Tony Rawlings

We are deeply thankful for their years of service here at CAC and wish them well in their new locations and adventures scattered around the globe. A special congratulations must go to Mr Tony Rawlings who is retiring after 27 years of service to CAC. We wish Mr Rawlings all the very best with this new chapter in his life.

I would also like to take a moment to wish all our departing students and families the very best of luck with their transfers and moves to new locations. The life of an international school has a somewhat transient feel to it at times, and while this is a defining feature, it can also be challenging for those who are leaving and those who are left behind. To all those who are leaving this year, please know that your contributions to our community are valued and we will miss each and every one of you. Good luck with your next steps.

And with that said, we can now turn our attention to the holiday—precious family time, a chance to relax and unwind, and time for some reflection about the year. We look forward to welcoming you back for the 2023–2024 school year on August 16th. Until then, please enjoy some rest, relaxation, and family time. Travel safe and take care.

Kind regards,
Andrew Buckman

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Last Friday, we held a truly fantastic graduation ceremony once again at the pyramids. This marked the 75th year that CAC has held its graduation ceremony at this iconic location. Even after all this time, the majesty of the event has not faded—it truly is an impressive location to celebrate the graduation of such an impressive group of students.

The academic pursuits of this group of scholars have been duly recognized through the high number of university offers they received from all around the world. These 71 students have been offered more than 215 university places across 11 different countries, many at highly competitive and extremely prestigious universities. We are very proud indeed of our students, and this accomplishment is a testament to their academic rigor and work ethic. We wish the Class of ’23 good luck as they embark on their educational journeys beyond CAC.

Back on campus, exams have been progressing as expected, and students in grades 9 to 11 are demonstrating their learning from this year. For most students, tomorrow (Monday) will be the last formal day of exams with Tuesday being set aside for students who missed exams or had conflicts to have the opportunity to make them up on a case-by-case basis. As for everyone else, Tuesday will be a well-deserved day of rest, followed by Wednesday, which is the last day of school.

It is important to note that all students are expected to attend on Wednesday 7 June. Students will cycle through all seven/eight of their classes, visiting with teachers to receive their semester two exam grades, and receive feedback on their exam performance. The day will conclude with a celebratory assembly where we will bid farewell to departing faculty and students. This formal closure to the end of the year is highly beneficial for all students and we eagerly await the presence of everyone on Wednesday. Dismissal is scheduled for 11:30 on that final day of school.

In the meantime, here’s hoping your child’s exams are going well and they are managing to balance the heavy academic demands of studying for and taking exams with some relaxation and recharging in between. The holiday will soon be upon us all!

List of upcoming events and important dates:
• Wed 31 May – Tue 6 June – Final semester exams, grades 9-11 (attendance is required)
• Wed 7 Jun: Last day of school (attendance expected)
• Wed 16 August: First day of school for 2023-24 school year

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

The Seniors left us a gift!

Seniors—Big kids at heart!

HS Recognition Night

Congratulations Valedictorian Sara Knox

Congratulations Salutatorian Yomna El Shabrawy

With High School Recognition Night behind us, all eyes are now focused on the graduation event at the Great Pyramids next week. High School Recognition is always a wonderful celebration of student success held annually at the end of the year. We invite students and families who have been recognized to receive special awards in a variety of categories that reflect the full spectrum of our academic and holistic program. For an overview of the awards, please visit this link.

Of course, for students in grades 9 to 11, it’s not all about graduation in the morning at the pyramids. For them, it is the final push of academic preparation and study for the close of the semester. In the past few additions of this weekly newsletter, we have been laying out tips and strategies, as well as advice for parents on effective preparation and study. Next week, exams will begin. Please refer back to some previous issues of this newsletter if you would like some practical tips on how to support your child and help them have a strong end of the year. For more information, please visit the Highro-Glyphics Blog on our website, here.

We have three athletics teams out representing CAC this week. The golf team is in Portugal, the tennis team is in Athens and the track team is enroute to London. We wish all of our athletes the best of luck in these final ISAA tournaments. Go Eagles!

The question on everybody’s lips today has been, “When will we find out about Week Without Walls?” Well, the answer to that question is… very soon! In fact, as I am writing this newsletter, Miss McCall is busy making the final tweaks to the rosters and information. You will be hearing from the school very soon with your child’s Week Without Walls allocations.

As you know, we have been working hard to meet the demand for trips, in particular, the interest for international experiences, which is very high. However, at no stage in the process have we been able to guarantee that everybody will get their first choice, nor will everybody be able to travel exactly where they would like to travel. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility with this. Please support your child through the next steps of the process as they / you complete the verification form to confirm their place on the selected Week Without Walls experience.

We are very proud of this program in the high school at CAC. We believe that these Week Without Walls experiences are rich and fulfilling, and a defining feature of the CAC educational experience. Whatever trip or experience your child is allocated to, we are sure that they will have an engaging, challenging, and fun experience.

As the weather warms up, we are looking forward to the many celebrations and significant moments that will draw a wonderful and busy year to its conclusion in just a couple of weeks. As always, thank you for your ongoing partnership and support. Have a wonderful weekend.

Well done to our Track and Field athletes for a successful meet last weekend. Much fun was had while students pushed themselves to perform to the best of their ability in their events. Thank you to our dedicated team of coaches too. We wish good luck to those sports teams that are traveling for the upcoming ISAA tournaments in Europe next weekend—the tennis, golf and track teams are all out and about representing CAC. Also, our varsity baseball team is just back from London where they won first place gold medals! And we have a swim meet on campus next weekend. Go Eagles!

Congratulations and thank you to our Grade 9 art students for designing some wonderful new murals around the themes of well-being and sustainability for the student lounge / cafeteria area. The murals have added a splash of color and reminders of important messages to the space.

New murals in the student cafeteria

As we approach the end of another academic year, it’s time to reflect on the journey we have undertaken together and prepare for a successful finish. The past months have been filled with learning, exploring and having fun, as well as growth and perseverance.

The final exams are just around the corner, and this period can often be overwhelming for students. Encourage your child to create a study schedule and break their study into manageable chunks. Remind them to review notes, seek clarification from teachers, and utilize available resources such as textbooks, class notes and online materials. Encouraging good study habits and maintaining a positive mindset will go a long way in helping them perform at their best.

While exams are important, it is equally crucial for students to strike a balance between studying and taking care of their well-being. Encourage your child to maintain a healthy lifestyle by getting adequate sleep, eating nutritious meals, and engaging in regular physical activity. Encourage them to take breaks during study sessions and engage in activities they enjoy to recharge. Prioritizing mental health is essential, so remind your child to reach out to their support system or a counselor if they feel overwhelmed or stressed.

Consistent attendance is vital in maximizing learning opportunities. Attending classes regularly ensures that students do not miss out on important instructions, discussions, and activities. As we near the end of the school year, it’s crucial to reinforce the importance of attending all classes. Encourage your child to be punctual and engaged in their studies until the very end. Every day of learning counts and contributes to their overall growth and success.

Mr McCuaig directs the HS Band

It’s been a busy week in the High School. (I wonder how many editions of the Highro-Glyphic have begun with that phrase?!) However, at this time of year the pace picks up as we accelerate towards June.

This week alone we have seen a Grade 11 TOK Exhibition, a High School Choir performance, two Spring Festival Music Concerts combining the musical talents of both middle and high school students, a Grade 9 & 10 Spring Formal dance and, as we head into the weekend, we are looking forward to the Booster Ball on Friday evening and rounding off the week off with a Screaming Eagles Track and Field meet at the Olympic Center in Maadi.

And, of course, alongside all of these wonderful events are daily lessons and classes packed full of learning, study and course content as we approach the end of the year.

Math learning in progress

Also this week, Ms McCall, met with Grade 8 students in our first welcome to the high school meeting. We shared information with them about next year’s Week Without Walls program so that they could begin to be excited about it and understand how to register their preferences. Thank you to all our High School parents for registering your children’s WWW preferences this week. Over the next couple of weeks we will begin the process of allocating students into their selected courses for WWW and you will be hearing from us soon about your child’s allocation. In the event your family missed the WWW registration window, the HS office will be in touch early next week with instructions on how to register for WWW.

Finally, we finished the day today with an assembly where we hosted the regional security attache from the United States Embassy in a collaboration to share tips for personal safety and security when students are outside of school. The health, well-being and safety of our students is always our top priority and we are appreciative of our partnership with the embassy to provide students with tools, tips and information to help keep them safe.

The weather is warming up, I hope you enjoy a very pleasant weekend. Looking forward to seeing any of you on campus at the booster ball tomorrow evening.
