Middle School Principal’s Letter
Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s news and views. It was another solid week of learning, exploring and having fun in the middle school. In Grade Six, our students were learning about cells. The knowledge they acquired was then applied to a project.
In Art class, students are creating individual pieces for themselves.
Our focus this week has been the completion of Semester One, 2nd Progress Reports. We will be posting the Semester One – 2nd, Progress Reports on Thursday, November 7th, at 3:00 pm. Teachers will be reporting on the Standard Based Grading and ATLs. Students will receive a comment if they are receiving a ‘Not Yet’ or in some cases, an approaching. If the student is receiving a Rarely for their ATLs, they will receive a comment along with it to support understanding of the grade. Please take a moment to discuss this with your child. The discussion could be around what they need to continue doing, or what they need to improve upon to get the results they are capable of.
Last Thursday we had our Halloween festival, and it was a fun time for everyone. Events of this magnitude require a great deal of planning and organization. A huge thank you to Emily Peebles for all her efforts with the “trick or treat” that took place in the elementary school. We would like to thank Ms. Spencer, our STUCO students, and all the other students who volunteered to hand out candies.
On Monday, November 4th, Grade 6 parents were invited to a well-attended “Afternoon Tea” with Ms. Harouny (the MS learning support teacher for language arts) and Ms. Spencer (the MS counselor) after school. The session was packed with useful strategies, recommendations, and resources on topics such as the school-to-home transition, organization, study skills, habits and routines, self-esteem and peer pressure;, and other issues related to the social and emotional wellbeing of the sixth-grade students. Thankfully, there was also coffee and plenty of chocolate chip cookies, to cater to the social and emotional wellbeing of the parents. Here is a link to the presentation slides and a document with resources created by Ms. Harouny to support students with reading, writing, and study skills.
Thank you for your continuous support of the Middle School.
In Partnership,
Courtney Bailey
Middle School Principal
