Middle School Principal’s Letter

Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s version of News and Views. It was another wonderful week of teaching and learning in middle school.

On the ERD day, the students did a variety of activities to improve their understanding of the importance of community service, Earth Day, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The grade six had the opportunity to go to the Wadi, and in a selected area, they collected trash and then learned about the change progression of the place and the rock formation from a geologist. It was good for our students to give back to their community; and they truly enjoyed being outdoors, outside the school trying something new. They were fully engaged in sorting and bagging vigorously and from their efforts, we collected 116kg of trash.

The seventh graders spent time developing their project for Earth Day. They have decided on the date for the social media launch and sign-up date for the race. The students have a goal in mind of how much they want to raise from the fundraiser. All they will be asking for is your commitment to helping them improve the air in our community.

Our eighth-graders spent the morning focusing on their passion project, by listening to three keynote speakers on the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals. We had Dr. Paul Hector from UNESCO, Egyptian SDG pioneer Mrs. Hanaa Helmy, and Mrs. Manal Olama the CEO of the Egyptian Food Bank who spoke to the students. Following the panel discussions, students had an opportunity to ask questions they had formulated ahead of time during a breakout session with one of the guest speakers of their choice. This helped them with gathering information from experts who are in the field. Bringing the outside community into our classrooms is an important element in our student’s education. Having the opportunity to connect with the outside community’s expertise is one of the strengths of our school’s unique location.

We had Dr. Lalonde this week to speak to teachers, students, and parents about Well-being. The topic of well-being is a school-wide initiative for teachers this year and next year we will focus on students and parents. We believe that through well-being our community will flourish and live a more balanced lifestyle.

Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.

In Partnership,
Courtney Bailey
Middle School Principal
