Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents

Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s version of the News and Views. It was a terrific week of teaching and learning in middle school. We started it off celebrating Mother Language Day. The students in Arabic, French, and Spanish brought in food from their home country, and the lines were long, and the plates were empty in no time. There were performances by different students singing in their native tongue. We also had students comedians who spoke about their culture and its uniqueness, and the event ended with a trio of girls dancers. Kudos! To Mr. Bably, Madame Istanbouli, and Señor Baren for organizing this fantastic event.

On Tuesday, we had the Spelling Bee final. Once again, the students amazed us with their calmness under pressure. Congratulations to our six finalists: Elsa Krapf, Hoda Abou Ghali,
Sofia Ilick, Kodjiro Sakaedani-Petrovic, Zarif Chowdhury, and Feranmi Adelakin. In the end, the final three were decided. The top three will be going on to represent CAC at the Cairo Spelling Bee competition.

First place: Feranmi Adelakin
Second place: Zarif Chowdhury
Third place: Elsa Krapf

The sixth graders will be allowed to bring their laptop home beginning this Thursday. We would like to ask that you make sure that when your child is working on the computer, it is in a location where you can see the screen. Please don’t allow the student in their room on their computer with the door closed. The laptop should be charged outside of the bedroom each night. The laptop is for school work and nothing else. We need your support at home to help encourage the digital intelligence skills we are teaching the students at school.

Next week, we will be issuing our first set of standards-based progress reports for the second semester on Thursday, March 5th. We hope that this “snapshot “ of learning will provide students and parents with valuable information about the progress made toward their academic learning goals. The reports will also be issued electronically. In the case of all progress reports, teachers will report only on the Approaches to Learning. In some cases, students will also receive a Narrative Comment from their teachers. However, in addition to the ATLs, all new students will receive a comment from their teachers. We strongly urge parents to take the time to talk with their children about their learning and focus specifically on the Approaches to Learning. We report on these separately, and in the past, we found that students who perform well on their Approaches to Learning, tend to also do well in areas of Academic Achievement.

In two weeks, we will have the Middle School Parent-Teacher Conferences. On Tuesday, March 10th, we will have a session beginning at 2:00 pm and will end at 5:00 pm. Parents are required to sign up for this session through Skyward. The sessions will be five minutes long. All core teachers will be available starting at 2:00 pm, and elective teachers will be available beginning at 3:15 pm. Crossover teachers will be available on Wednesday only.

On Wednesday, March 11th, we will run the second half of our MS Parent-Teacher Conferences. We are asking that parents sign up using Skyward for a time slot to meet with teachers from 7:45 am – 4:15 pm. Each parent will get ten minutes with the teacher. All crossover teachers will be available. Your child should attend the conference with you, regardless of which day you schedule to attend the conference.

The booking will be open on Sunday, March 1st, at 3:00 pm and close Monday, March 9th, at 3:00 pm.

Announcements

PTO is on a mission to deliver donations!

We will be visiting AMC-SNAP and Egypt Equine Aid located in Sakkara to deliver bags full of donated goods that we have collected at CAC.
The AMC-SNAP center is a veterinarian medical and awareness center serving the local area by providing low-cost animal clinic, TNR dogs and training for new veterinarians.
Egypt Equine Aid helps horses, donkeys and mules of Egypt.
The purpose of our visit is to deliver good collected during our New Year Drive.
We will meet at the Front Gate of CAC On March 2nd at 8.30 AM, and take the bags full of donated goods over to Sakkara. The two organizations are only 5 minutes apart, so we’ll easily visit both, drop off the donations, and learn about their work. We plan to be back at CAC at 11.30 AM.
Instead of the usual EGP 100 for the bus ride, we ask that you come and bring a blanket, a towel, some containers, a leash, a collar, soft toys, balls or pillows.
