Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s version of the news and views. We have completed week three of e-learning and so far so good. While teachers and students are struggling with being apart, a new challenge for parents surface.

On Wednesday, during my coffee morning discussion, the focus was on parents and how to help adolescents at home. The tips are pragmatic because I want to help parents enjoy this time at home with their young adolescents. Some of the things I spoke about were as follows:

  • Communication is important about what is going on. Explain why we are in the situation we are currently
  • Adolescents crave consistency and routine (20 mins work/20 mins socializations/20 mins chores/ then 20 mins work)
  • It is important to have non-negotiables to start your day as a family. Adolescents need that more now than before because they had school
  • When there is a meltdown, ask these three questions. Do you want me to listen? Do you want me to react? Do you want me to solve the problem?
  • Humor is important – keep a laughing log of funny things said throughout the day. Share it during the family time just before bed.

I want to thank the parents who were able to attend the Principal Coffee Morning and sharing their insights on how their child is adapting to e-learning.

We were concerned about the amount of time our students were spending online before moving to e-learning. However, we realize the importance of Digital Competence, and that our students need to learn to live, learn, and work in the virtual world. Digital Competence is much more than the ability to use information technology, which children can and do learn on their own. It is a whole set of knowledge, skills, socio-emotional capabilities, and wisdom necessary for living, learning, and working in the virtual world.

According to many of the experts, this is a great opportunity to help our students enter the virtual world with competency and wisdom. We have to help our students become productive learners and responsible citizens in the virtual world, therefore schools should intentionally consider how to make good use of this opportunity to teach digital competence. It is good that we are currently, constantly and actively reflecting on our practices.

Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.

In Partnership,
Courtney Bailey
