Middle School Principal’s Letter
Dear Parents,
Thank you for reading this week’s version of the News and Views. It was an eventful week filled with teaching and learning. We started the week with the STUCO (student government) speeches, the introduction of the Community Service/ Service Learning project, and the launch of Digital Citizenship.
Our teachers have intentionally found options to help our students build essential skills such as self-management. Our goal is for students to develop, understanding for self-reliance, to understand their emotions as well as levels of stress. We realize that their competency in SEL (Social Emotional Learning) can positively impact their future success as a student.
We had the STUCO elections on Monday. For the first time in the past 12 years, we had to split the speeches into two groups due to the large number of students interested. A few parents were present for the speeches, and were blown away by the creativity and courage of the students. Although all students were eloquent in their speeches, unfortunately, we could only have four winners:
President: Sean Henry
Vice President: Safiya Zaki
Treasuerer: Amin Marei
Secretary: Amin Abou Ghali
The students play an important role in the culture we have in the school. In sixth-grade Langauge Arts, students had an opportunity to share how they practiced the core values during the summer.
I want to correct the information I shared in last week’s News and Views. The sixth-grade tea will be held on Sunday, September 11th, instead of September 21st. Please adjust the date in your calendar. It will be in room 115, from 3:30 – 4:30. We look forward to seeing you there. The eighth grade will have their tea on Monday, September 19th, from 3:30 – 4:30 pm, and the seventh grade will have their tea on Wednesday, September 21st, after the Principal Coffee Morning.
In Social Studies, students worked in collaboration while practicing ATL skills such as self-management and ownership of learning.
In sixth grade, Science, students were doing a lab on the transformation of energy.
Though today’s young people have gained a reputation as “digital natives,” that doesn’t always translate to having the digital skills that are needed to succeed in school and beyond. On Tuesday, we launch a six week program on “How can we create a culture of digital citizenship?” This program will culminate with a Capstone project at the end to share with parents. We will do a parent piece on September 21st at the Principal Coffee Morning. It will be powerful when you can have the same language as your child in a conversation at the dinner table.
Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.
In Partnership,
Courtney Bailey
