Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s version of the News and Views. The students and teachers have settled back nicely into their routines, and great things are happening inside and outside the classroom.

On Thursday, you will be receiving semester one report cards. The report cards will provide you with their ATLs, grades, and a comment from the teacher. It is crucial for students to capitalize on their hard work, that you take the time to sit down with your child and review their comments and ATLs. We will also take time next week during SSR time to reflect with students on their semester one performance. The students will also be setting goals for semester two during this reflection time.

In grade seven, Language Arts students created mini-articles and book jackets. This was based on the book they read, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park.

Before the novel study, students researched terms and concepts discussed in the book. After reading, as a class, the children extended their research to write their own stories of climate refugees, taking the novel as their model. They then created book jackets to increase their peers’ awareness of various environmental crises, and also to imagine how they might impact characters and communities in their stories.

In grade seven Science, students had the opportunity to welcome Dr. Zainab Awad, an expert in the field of astronomy. She did presentations to three science classes. Dr. Zainab was recently on campus reviewing our observatory in November, and we believe her experience and knowledge greatly benefitted and intrigued our students.

Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.

In Partnership,
Courtney Bailey
The Middle School Principal
