Middle School Principal’s Letter

Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s edition of News and Views. It has been another solid week of teaching and learning.

Our sixth-grade “wheel” classes are nearing the end of their first rotation. In this unique structure, students rotate through a variety of electives: Drama, Art, Design and Engineering, 2050, Digital Citizenship, and Social & Emotional Learning. Exposing students to such diverse subjects allows them to discover their interests and passions, which they can further pursue in high school whenever possible.

As part of our Speaker Series we had Luca Martinez on campus this week to speak to the middle school about sustainability. Luca is a conservation filmmaker and speaker, dedicated to showcasing the beauty of the wild and advocating for its preservation. With over 2.5 million followers across social media, Luca has amassed a substantial online following,  using his platform to educate and inspire others about the wonders of the wetlands. Through storytelling and visuals, Luca has introduced the rarely experienced Everglades to more than 400 million worldwide viewers. When not in the field, he gives talks about the Everglades and the power of youth voice in conservation around the world as he believes story-telling is key to raising awareness and inspiring action. He is also a contributing writer for Oceanographic Magazine furthering his impact within the conservation community. His presentation was truly inspiring and reminded our students what they are capable of achieving when you pursue your passion.

Our teacher task force for Silent Sustained Reading (SSR) has developed a pathway to ignite a love of reading in our students. We’re excited to collaborate next with the student task force to hear their thoughts on how they stay motivated. This will give students a chance to exercise agency in their learning, and we have much to learn from them.

Rehearsals for Mary Poppins are in full swing, with only 11 rehearsals left before opening night! Meanwhile, the selection process for the Teranga Cup team has been completed, and congratulations to the 12 boys and girls chosen to represent our school. It was a challenging decision for the coaches, as all students gave their best efforts. For those who didn’t make the team this year, we hope they’ll have another opportunity next year.

Thank you to all the parents who attended the Parent Coffee Morning on Wednesday. It was a great turnout, and we had meaningful discussions about the middle school journey. As a reminder, middle school represents a critical phase in a child’s development, the second major developmental change they go through. Our role is to guide them into becoming responsible, respectful individuals who value themselves, others, and their environment.

We are focused on nurturing students who have the courage to tell the truth, take responsibility for their actions, and accept the consequences of their decisions. Developing perseverance now is key to building resilience later in life. Compassion for both themselves and others is essential, as is the practice of integrity in all they do. Lastly, we encourage creativity in every facet of their lives.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our middle school community.

In Partnership,
Courtney Bailey
The Middle School Principal
