Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s version of the News and Views. It was a week of solid teaching and learning. However, students are looking forward to the Valentine’s Day social tonight. It’s an opportunity for them to have some good clean fun.

In Grade 6 Health class, students have been exploring nutrition by researching different types of grains and their nutritional benefits, as well as learning about the best sources of protein and carbohydrates. The unit culminated in a classroom visit from nutritionist Lisa Clarke, who guided the students in preparing healthy snacks in the food lab. We hope your child is now more inspired to choose healthy food options and discovered how simple it can be to make nutritious snacks.

In grade 7 Social Studies the students have completed the final round of voting on Space Laws.

This culminating activity was for them as a sovereign country in the United Nations to come up with resolutions for a Space Treaty that other countries had to vote on. Here are a few examples of the law they created:

Topic: Militarization and Weapons in Space
Proposal: North Korea — Complete Ban and Sanctions Objects that pose a threat to any human-made infrastructures will be treated as a serious crime, with responsible nations facing UN trade and technology sanctions.

Topic: Cybersecurity
Proposal: Greece — Mandatory International standards for Cybersecurity There should be an international cybersecurity standard, that no matter how developed the country is all nations must meet this standard.

In this culminating activity, students not only deepened their understanding of international diplomacy and policy-making, but they also honed critical thinking skills as they worked to craft and evaluate space-related legislation. By assuming the roles of sovereign nations, they navigated complex global concerns, such as militarization, weaponry, and cybersecurity.

While considering legal, ethical, and technological implications. In doing so, they practiced research, negotiation, and consensus-building, ultimately learning how to balance national interests with the needs of the international community. This hands-on approach to lawmaking allowed students to apply historical, political, and scientific knowledge in a real-world context, reinforcing their analytical, collaborative, and problem-solving abilities.

We are in the final planning stage of the Career Fair Day. I want to thank all the parents who have volunteered to share their expertise with our students. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your continued support of the Middle School.

In Partnership,
Courtney Bailey
The Middle School Principal
