Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for reading this week’s version of the News and Views. It was an awesome week of teaching and learning, and having fun in the middle school.

The week started with a resounding performance by the (AFCENT Band). The band entertained students and faculty during lunch break.

The students did their MAP testing on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This is the first time I didn’t see any students in the halls who felt like they didn’t give their best effort. We are proud of the way the students approached the test.

In grade seven social Studies, students just completed a project on “How do our cultures shape our perspectives?”

In Choir class, students were having fun learning a new song for the PEACE day assembly.

In Drama class, students collaborated in groups to create a scene that they would perform in front of the class.

Next week, we will have the STUCO elections. The candidates spent the week campaigning by putting up their posters. This is a great opportunity for students to display our core value of courage. We are looking forward to the speeches next Monday morning.

I want to thank the parents who attended the Parent Coffee Morning. And a special thanks to the dads who were in attendance. We appreciate you being there. I am sharing the presentation.

I want to remind you that we will be having a grade six parent’s Technology session next week, Wednesday, Sept 17th, in room 115.

English Language Arts Program Review

Over the past year, CAC has focused on reviewing and revising our PK–12 English Language Arts program to ensure alignment between our English Language Arts Beliefs and Practices and current research. Building on the strengths of our existing program, we have committed to further developing foundational literacy skills in the Elementary years through a greater focus on phonics and phonemic awareness using the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) program. We have also created a more intentional balance of fiction and nonfiction, with a focus on helping students see themselves in their reading while gaining insights into new perspectives, cultures, and voices. In writing, each grade level now concentrates on two of the three major genres—narrative, explanatory, and argument/opinion—as the curriculum spirals from K–12, allowing students to deepen their skills in meaningful ways. Finally, the program has been designed holistically to enable students to build knowledge, cultivate empathy, and develop as critical thinkers, effective communicators, discerning consumers, and responsible producers of information. This comprehensive approach ensures that our students are well prepared for the rigors of more advanced English study, including the IB Diploma program. Throughout the year, we invite you to engage your child in conversations about what they are learning, reading, and writing, so that you can share in their growth and discoveries.

Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.

In Partnership,
Courtney Bailey
The Middle School Principal
