Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s version of the News and Views. We had a solid week of teaching and learning. Thank you to Carmen and Rhea for their efforts to organize Ramadan decorations at the front entrance; it is brilliant.

In eighth-grade social studies, the students did their first Ted Talks today on a variety of topics. There will be a video posting once all the classes have completed their talks.

A reminder that our semester two progress reports two will be posted on April 22nd. This report will include academic grades and ATLs. Students with N’s and R’s will receive a comment. Please take the time to go over the ATLs and grades with your child.

I wanted to share a summary of an article that I was reading in the Washington Post. It is something that I have been saying for the last ten years to students and parents. The title is how to sabotage your chance of getting into college. Kaplan educational services mentioned that nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of admission officers in the latest survey said it is “fair game” for reviewers to visit applicants’ social pages.

The popularity of various social media platforms (Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, etc.) expands among students. The pandemic has increased their use by admission offices in recruiting applicants. Therefore as parents, you have to be vigilant at looking at your child’s social media platforms to see what they are posting. The reality is that many admission officers are right out of college, often in their early 20s. Guess where a lot of them spend their time? You’ve got it, social media. Ask your child, “if I were to log on to your social media right now, would you be embarrassed by what I saw? If so, they would probably have some cleaning up to do. Regardless of what they think, remind them that their social media footprint is being looked at.

Thanks for your continuous support of the middle school.

In Partnership,

Courtney Bailey
Middle School Principal

MS Earth Day Celebration and Race to Clean the Air 2021
This year, the Middle School will celebrate Earth Day by organizing a few activities to take place during school on Thursday, April 22. We will run the Race to Clean the Air Walk-A-Thon as a fundraising event during school hours (instead of after school as in years past). Students will also engage in Earth Day activities in advisory and take part in a neighborhood clean-up Thursday morning. This is a 7th grade student-led initiative created to help promote clean air, green spaces, and community activism. You can make a difference in our community and help combat air pollution and climate change by participating in the Race to Clean the Air fundraising event.

PTO Grant for the FIRST LEGO LEAGUE CHALLENGE
CONGRATULATIONS to Ms. Lisa Young, MS Science/Math Teacher, for being awarded the PTO Grant. Ms. Young will use the funds to plan, prepare, and have students enter the FIRST LEGO LEAGUE CHALLENGE, an international competition organized for ES and MS students.

First Lego League is an engaging, multi-disciplinary program. Students participating in the competition will design, build, and program a robot to complete a variety of tasks. In addition to the engineering and coding aspects, students research an assigned topic and create a solution for a real-world problem. Students prototype their solution and present their idea. This challenge also teaches them teamwork and collaboration skills. There is already an FLL program in Egypt, so students could compete against other schools. The competitions have a sports arena-like feel and this experience is an excellent opportunity for students that do not participate in sports to be apart of a team and compete. The club will take place after school in the 2021-2022 academic year.

PTO Monthly Meeting
Join our monthly meeting in April—date coming soon! PTO will discuss PTO Board vacancies for the next school year, the Virtual Auction of Art, our upcoming International Race (CAC Great Global Get Out) in May, and present the PTO Annual Report.

PTO Board Positions
Interested in impacting your very own CAC school community? Consider running for a position on the PTO Executive Board, if so. Contact cacpto@cacegypt.org for detailed job descriptions. Board positions: President, Vice-president, Secretary, Outreach Coordinator, and MS Liaison.
