Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s version of the News and Views. It was a solid week of teaching and learning. Our athletes are putting the final touches on preparing for the CISSA football tournament this weekend. The swimmers are participating in a time trial on the weekend.

The middle school production of “Into the Woods” opened on Wednesday and will run through to Friday with a matinee. The thespians have been preparing for months and would love to see you there supporting and appreciating their efforts. This musical performance promises to be exhilarating.

Your child’s advisory teacher has invited you to the Student-Led Conferences on Tuesday, May 21st. This event is an opportunity for students to share with you how they have progressed as learners throughout the school year. At the end, your child will ask you to fill out a brief survey with three questions to provide them with some feedback. We are expecting 100% attendance. If you cannot attend, please notify your child’s advisory teacher. We ask that you do it at home and send photos to the advisory teacher.

I want to take a moment to congratulate Mr. Dzamashvili and the following students, Reem Alabed, Maira Okubo, and Heeyoon Ahn, who participated in the European Middle School Honor Orchestra in Berlin. The students represented CAC with pride and had a wonderful time.

This week, the sixth-graders presented their Statistics Project. Our students have dedicated themselves to collecting data, analyzing it, and crafting presentations on topics that deeply resonate with them. Watching them delve into these issues and apply their mathematical skills to real-world scenarios has been inspiring.

In French class, the students worked in pairs, practicing speaking, writing, listening, and memorizing the language to write a story. This provided students an opportunity to engage with the language.

Mindfulness is a simple, yet powerful way to reset your brain. So, what is mindfulness exactly? Think about a time you’ve been working on a computer. Have you ever reached a point where the computer seemed to be lagging, moving slowly, or simply not working properly? You might find that rebooting the computer makes a huge difference in resolving these issues. Why is that? When you reboot a computer, you’re clearing out the memory stores, ending recently run processes, and starting fresh. Mindfulness can do the same thing for your brain. Read more.

Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.

Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s version of the News and Views. It was a short week. I hope you enjoyed your long weekend.

The remainder of the school year will be busy, with much going on in your child’s life in and out of school. Some will be dealing with the loss of a friend who will be moving on. Others will be thinking about the friends they are leaving behind and wondering if they will be able to make new friends at their new school. No matter their circumstances, there is no easy way to manage them but to listen and validate their feelings.

Please be on the lookout for an invitation from your child’s advisory teacher inviting you to the Student-Led Conferences on Tuesday, May 21st. This event is an opportunity for students to share with you how they have progressed as learners throughout the school year. More information will be coming soon. We are expecting 100% attendance. If you are unable to attend, a teacher will fill in for you.

We recently had the grade eight TED Talks, and once again, we were amazed at our students’ communication skills and stage presence. The topics that students focused on were ones they were passionate about.

This is a friendly reminder that Into the Woods tickets go on sale next week. This musical performance promises to be exhilarating. Be sure to get your tickets before they are sold out!

Life Lesson# 6: Our life is what our thoughts make it.

Our thoughts play a crucial role in shaping our lives. A person’s perspective, mindset, and attitudes influence their experiences and ultimately determine the quality of their life. The power of positive thinking impacts your overall well-being and happiness.

Tonight is the middle school end-of-year social. It will be an evening of good, clean fun. This is a reminder that the social ends at 7:00 p.m.

Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.

News&Views, Week of May, 1st, 2024

Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s version of the News and Views. It was a busy week with the Ted Talks presentation in grade eight. I wish you all a restful holiday break. For those of you celebrating Eastern Easter, I wish you a Happy Easter. I encourage you to take advantage of the break to rest and recharge for the stretch run to Summer.

During the Cairo Round of the World Scholar’s Cup, CAC was represented by 45 dedicated scholars who spent several months preparing for the competition.  However, we had two students that we needed to celebrate, and they were Karim Attia, and Michael Roberts. The boys won the prestigious Jack Kor Award, which is given to the best scholars. Karim Attia won the junior division, and Michael Roberts won the senior division in the following categories: Science and Technology/Literature & Media/Art & Music/History/Social Studies and a Special Area customized each year. The World Scholars Cup is an event that gives students who excel academically and strive for excellence while maintaining a positive and inspiring work ethic an opportunity to shine and be celebrated. Michael is an eighth grader who participated in the senior division and won in all six categories.

On April 25th four performing groups from Middle and High school attended a music competition hosted by Bandmakers Cairo Music Academy. The HS Band achieved 1st place overall while the MS Concert band took 2nd place in the Big Band open competition. The MS choir also had a strong showing taking 3rd place in the Choir competition. The MS Beginning Band did very well and accomplished a 4th place finish. Although little emphasis was placed on either winning or losing the CAC groups came away feeling successful all around. Congratulations to all 70 participating musicians and a huge thank you goes to our supporting chaperones: Todd & Karishma Schumacher, John White, Alex Dzamashvili, Dolly Shalaby, and Margaret Wong.

Life Lesson# 5: Your mission never leaves you

When you’re not feeling aligned or unsure of your next steps, your job is to make time for yourself alone so that you can leave the noise of the world for a while and hear your soul speak to you.

Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.

Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s version of the News and Views. It was a busy week with MAP testing make-up. I want to wish you all a restful three day weekend and happy Sinai Liberation Day.

This past weekend, CAC played host to the Cairo Round of the World Scholar’s Cup, welcoming around 240 students from 13 different schools across Cairo. CAC was ably represented by 45 dedicated scholars who have spent the past several months preparing for the competition. Over two demanding days they debated, wrote essays, completed a challenging multi-subject exam, and collaborated with their teammates on a multimedia quiz bowl. In a glittering closing ceremony, CAC achieved many team and individual successes, including the top five Champion Teams in the Junior division. Congratulations to all the scholars and thank you to all who helped to ensure the success of the event.

On April 25th, our choir and band students will participate in a citywide Battle of the Bands. The event is scheduled at the Center Court at Gezira Club in Zamalek. It will be a day of fun, music, and entertainment. We have over 70 students performing. It promises to be a day of good entertainment.

For all the families leaving us at the end of the year, this is a reminder that you must communicate with the admissions office if you haven’t done so yet. We need to get this information to plan accordingly when we are finalizing the Master schedule for the 2024-25 school year.

Life Lesson# 4: Sometimes you have to let people down to be happy

You and your mental health are more important than your career, more money than other people’s opinions, that event you said you would attend, your partner’s mood and your family’s wishes. If taking care of yourself means letting someone down, then let someone down. Your self-love must always be stronger than your desire to be loved by others.

Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.

Varsity Baseball Inter-squad game
This week’s game turned into an intersquad match as many players from the Scrubs were unavailable. The game showcased impressive skills and highlights from our team:

  • Nathan stood out with a spectacular diving catch, followed by a forceout at second base. At bat, he hit a double and a single, scored twice, and stole several bases. Nathan also contributed two strong innings as a pitcher.
  • Wyatt had a good game, hitting a double and a single, scoring two runs, and pitching a solid inning of relief.
  • Kaden showed off some power by hitting a home run and a single, while scoring two runs. He also made a key defensive play by throwing out a runner trying to steal second base.
  • Isaac contributed with a double and a single, adding a run.

The game was a great opportunity to witness our players’ show their skills on both offense and defense, highlighting their versatility.

Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s version of the News and Views. This week, our focus was on MAP testing, and it is lovely to see the smiles on student’s faces after testing.

We want to thank you for supporting your child this past week so that they could perform their best. Once all make-up tests are completed, we will share the final results with you.

We will issue the second-semester progress reports today. Talk with your child about their approaches to learning and grades. The eighth graders must finish their middle school experience on a high note. We want the seventh-graders to realize the stakes will be higher next year. The sixth-graders will be a year older.

The weekend will be very busy for the Middle School. On Friday and Saturday, we are hosting the World Scholars Cup Cairo Round on campus. We will also be hosting the CISSA soccer tournament. On Saturday, we will have the swimming time trials. It will be a full day of campus activities, and we look forward to welcoming you.

We understand that the next few weeks will be short due to various events. If you anticipate your child’s absence from school, please communicate with the office. This is particularly important as the lack of school days in April might result in students missing out on important work. Your timely communication will help us ensure that they stay on track with their studies.

Life Lesson# 3: Own your responsibilities and your future.

You’re not responsible for your trauma, but you are responsible for breaking the cycle and not hurting more people because of what happened to you. You will never control your future if you let your present be controlled by your past. What happened yesterday may not be your responsibility, but how you behave today is.

Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.

Middle School Principal’s Letter

Thank you for reading this week’s News and Views. It is a short week due to the Eid Al Fitr holiday. We wish you all a safe and restful break.

When we return from break, only 36 school days remain. As usual, there will be a lot to get done in that short period of time. We will administer our Spring MAP testing beginning on Tuesday, April 16th, with Language Usage, followed by Math on April 17th, and ending with Reading on April 19th.

We are asking for your support by making sure your child gets enough sleep and has something nutritious to eat before coming to school on the morning of the test. If their snacks are heavy in sugar, they will crash at some point during the test. All tests will be done first thing in the morning during advisory.

Great to see our students in physical education class enjoying the project adventure unit again.

Life Lesson# 2: Never let rejection lead to self-rejection.

A person who has experienced rejection fears rejection, and a person who fears rejection tends to push or run away before they can be rejected. In their subconscious mind, they have avoided rejection. In reality, they’ve been rejected again this time by themselves.

Thank you for your continous support of the middle school.

Middle School Principal’s Letter

Great job to the Iftar planning committee for organizing a successful event on campus! The Iftar brought our community together and highlighted our appreciation for sharing a meal.

A big thank you to the parents who joined us for the final principal coffee of the year. Our discussion on culture and the dopamine-driven world our children live in was insightful. As educators, we must find ways to adapt to these changes to better prepare our students for the future.

In the financial literacy class, students are currently working on the budget unit. They collaborate in groups to define their budgets, fostering teamwork and practical financial skills.

As we enter the final stretch of the school year, let’s remember that we have 41 days left. While some families are transitioning out of CAC, others are staying on. I encourage all students to continue reading for 30 – 45 minutes daily over the summer. The upcoming transitions, such as from sixth to seventh grade and seventh to eighth grade, will bring new challenges and expectations.

Lastly, I’d like to share the first of eight lessons people often learn too late: “Your diet isn’t just what you eat.” This lesson teaches us that our mental diet what we watch, read, and who we surround ourselves with is just as important. Let’s focus on removing negativity from our lives to promote a healthier mind.

Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.

Courtney Bailey

Jennifer Holm’s Visit
This week we had Newbery Honor author, Jennifer L. Holm visit!  Ms. Holm has written some of our students’ favorite books including the Swing it Sunny graphing novel series and The Lion of Mars which was featured in this year’s Battle of the Books.  During our 7th and 8th grade SSRs, 6th grade Language Arts and Creative Writing Classes, Ms. Holm spoke to our students about what it’s like to collaborate with her younger brother on her Graphic Novels and the process of how those books are made.  It was great to see many of our students make connections and realize that they had read one of Ms. Holm’s books in Elementary school.  Several Middle School students were also invited to a special breakfast with Ms. Holm for completing the Jennifer Holm Reading Challenge – finishing 6 or more of her books.  Thank you Ms. Holm for visiting CAC!

Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for reading this week’s version of the News and Views. This week, you had the opportunity to come and meet with your children’s teacher and learn firsthand how they are doing and what they will need to do to end the year on a high.

We are truly grateful to the over 90% of parents who attended the conferences. Your active involvement demonstrates your deep care and commitment. Your partnership with our teachers is invaluable in guiding your child to excel both academically and socially. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

The remaining 45 days of the school year are crucial for your child’s academic progress and preparation for the next grade level. We are here to ensure they make the most of this time. As some of our students transition to high school and families move on, please know that our support for you and your child remains steadfast.

In grade seven, geography students are learning about Urban Planning. For their culminating assessment, they worked in groups on How Can We Incorporate Sustainable Design Principles Into Urban Planning.

The students are researching their Ted Talk topics in grade eight social studies.

I am eagerly looking forward to the Coffee Morning next Wednesday, April 3rd at 8:15am in room 115. This is a valuable opportunity for us to connect, share experiences, and strengthen our school community. Your presence is highly valued, and we hope to see everyone there.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for your continuous support of the middle school. Your involvement and support are instrumental in creating a nurturing and enriching environment for our students. Thank you for being such wonderful partners in your child’s education journey.

Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for reading this week’s version of the News and Views. We hope you all had a restful and relaxing Spring Break. It was good to welcome everyone back on campus. The students and faculty had some adjustments to make with the start of Ramadan on the way.

I want to congratulate the Swim team for bringing home the gold medal from the ISSA championship. The athletes’ dedication and commitment paid off, and many came back having performed their personal best. A huge thank you to Coach Tatiana and Coach Sayed; once again, your knowledge and expertise helped our athletes perform their best when it mattered most.

We started season three activities/sports on Sunday, with well over 150 students participating in a sport or activity after school. We are slowly getting to our goal of having every child in the middle school participate in one activity or sport each season.

Next week, we have parent-teacher conferences. This is a reminder that on Tuesday, we have sessions from 2:15 to 5:30 and on Wednesday, from 7:45 to 4:10. We want you to bring your child to the conference. It is important that they hear firsthand what their teachers have to say. There are roughly 50 days remaining in the school year. We want students to finish the year strong, so it is important that they hear from their teachers what they have to do to accomplish this. Here is a link with potential questions to ask the teachers during the conferences.

Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.

Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for reading this week’s version of the News and Views. Ramadan Mubarak to all the families celebrating the holy month.

I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a restful and safe Spring Break. This Break is timely; we will all benefit from it and return rested and recharged.

We had Spirit Week, organized by STUCO, Ms. Torky,  and Ms. Fides. It was a highly emotional week for students. This event brings students and teachers together, engaging enthusiastically in a fun and challenging way. Seeing the students and teachers dressed up each day to show their school spirit was wonderful.

The students were inspired and motivated to participate in the activities. The number of students participating was at an all-time high. The food drive for the GSS staff was a success. Although the winner of the food drive challenge was grade six, the real winners were the general services staff members receiving the gifts and all the students participating in a community-driven action. We hope the more significant impact (reward) is a lifelong learning to make a difference in their community.

Many thanks to the students and teachers who supported the kickoff of the after school activity ‘Global Citizenship with African Hope‘ yesterday. Coaches Lani Deakin, Jorge Villafuerte, Carlos Bustamante, and Pumla Sathula were on hand to guide African Hope students as many of them tested weight room equipment for the first time. Students also enjoyed volleyball with Coach Jorge.

I want to thank the Booster Club volunteers for putting up the Ramadan decorations inside the front of the school. It means a lot to our community.

Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.
