Highro Glyphics Newsletter Week of August 19, 2020

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Dear High School Parents,

Thank you for reading this week’s edition of Highro-Glyphics!

It was great to see the students back on campus for the Health and Safety Orientations. Students received a warm welcome in a virtual assembly held in their Block A classrooms. They learned about important division and school-wide health and safety protocols before proceeding to orientation sessions in all of the classrooms they will be using.
For all of us, especially the students, it will take some time to adjust to all of the new procedures. School will feel quite different than it did before the pandemic began. However, as I told the students in the virtual assemblies, they are resilient. They can choose how they react to changing circumstances, and they can bounce back and be even stronger than before. Their choices will shape their high school experience, no matter how long the pandemic lasts or what unexpected obstacles get in their way.

Islamic New Year

Thursday, August 20 there will be no school for the Islamic New Year holiday. We hope your family enjoys a relaxing long weekend.

Blended Learning

We are excited to begin our 2x2x1 blended learning program on Sunday, August 23. As has been communicated previously, the High School will begin the year with a blended model, combining face-to-face instruction with online learning. Please click here to review the HS Blended Learning 2x2x1 Schedule.

Health and Safety Checklist

Please take time to review the checklists for students and parents (click here) related to health and safety. As with anything, teenagers will require practice to develop good habits. Please make sure your child knows how to properly wear a mask and does so in all public areas. Please also model appropriate wearing of masks, as they will follow your example. We need to be quite strict about wearing masks and maintaining social distance on campus. Students who do not comply with health and safety protocols will be sent home.

Principal’s Virtual Coffee

Join us for a principal’s coffee Tuesday, September 1 at 2:00 pm. We will discuss how our Blended Learning program will work, review health and safety protocols, and discuss plans moving forward. Parents will receive a Zoom link via email next week.

Students late returning to Cairo

We appreciate that due to circumstances beyond their control, some families have not yet arrived in Cairo. If you are in this situation and have not already been in communication with me, please contact me at jduggan@cacegypt.org. Students unable to return to campus due to COVID-19 related travel complications have access to online materials and should contact their teachers now that their schedules are available on Skyward. Please also see information in the CAC Reopening Plan.

Off-campus privileges

Please make your high schooler reviews the HS Morning Announcements for details regarding off-campus privileges.

Food on campus

Campus food vendors remain closed for the time being. Students are encouraged to bring healthy snacks and lunch from home. Food deliveries will be allowed to the back gate only starting Sunday.

Back to School Night

Back to School Night will be the evening of Wednesday, September 2. We will announce more details in next week’s Highro-Glyphics.

Schedule Change Requests: August 23rd is the first day to request schedule changes or add/drop requests. Please email your request or question to your counselor starting Sunday, August 23rd. There is no guarantee your request can be honored. Upcoming Registration Deadlines for September and October SAT Exams
As many exams were cancelled during the Spring Semester, the College Board has added an exam date on September 26th.
The deadline for registering for the September exam is August 26th.
There is also another exam on October 3rd. The registration deadline for the October exam is September 4th.

If you would like to take this exam, you will need to register at www.collegeboard.org. Since CAC is a private test center, you must register using the test center code of #54-105. If you have any questions, please email Cameron Simon at csimon@cacegypt.org.

Counseling Appointment System: Stay tuned to learn about the online appointment system to meet your counselor. Depending on the nature of the appointment, the meetings will be held on Google Meet or in person. We will also suggest what types of topics should be handled via email. Our goal is to make our communication as efficient and smooth as possible, while being able to build and maintain those valuable connections with our students.

Coming up soon: Future daily announcements and Highroglypics will have dates and details about Freshman Seminar, Transition information for new students, Career exploration information for sophomores and juniors, Senior College Programming and more based on your grade level.

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!

We are happy to be back on campus. Mitigation measures are in place at the library too, and we are looking forward to helping students with their research and reading this year.

COVID mitigation in the CAC Libraries

Please read this document to see the procedures we have put in place to keep our staff and the CAC community safe. It will be updated as circumstances require it.

All library materials due

All library materials checked out after March 11 are now due back in the library. There will be a drop box at the front gate this week for book returns. After Sunday, August 30, books must be returned to the MHS library itself. Overdue notices will go out on August 23 and will continue monthly throughout the year. Please clear your library accounts now to start the year fresh. Failure to return library materials on time will result in blocked Skyward access.

Please note that returned library materials will stay in quarantine for 72 hours, and will be checked in after that, so patrons may see books they returned on the monthly overdue notice.
