CAC High School Principal’s Notes
Dear High School Parents,
Welcome to this week’s edition of Highro-Glyphics!
It is hard to believe we are finishing a month of blended learning in the High School. While campus certainly feels different than it used to, as I visit classrooms, I am struck by how normal classes feel, even with everyone in masks. Harkness discussions happen, math problems get solved, science labs get completed, art gets created—great learning transpires! Kudos to our teachers for their continued efforts to help students learn in this new environment, and kudos to our students for the hard work they are doing.
Like the rest of the world, we do not know when things will be normal again, or what “normal” will turn out to be. We do know that we want to maintain the momentum of our reopening plan. To do so, we need everyone to practice mitigation measures away from campus. Teenagers are social beings, but to keep themselves and everyone safe, they need to exercise caution whenever they are with friends: they should not be participating in large gatherings (especially parties), they should continue to wear masks in public, and they should practice social distancing at all times outside their homes.
We hope that the second month of school will be even more successful than the first. Thanks to everyone for all of their efforts and support.

International Day of Peace
While we can’t have our usual all-school Peace Day assembly, we are still commemorating the day. Students are asked to wear white on Sunday and Monday.
A Note Regarding the SAT/ACT
Thanks to the Counseling Department for organizing a virtual town hall with representatives from Fordham and Northeastern Universities, with a particular focus on how to apply “test optional” to schools. Colleges and universities are well aware of the many difficulties students have faced in trying to take the SAT and ACT in Egypt and globally, and they recognize that for many students it will not be possible to send test scores with their applications. I asked the Fordham representative if our students should travel outside Egypt to take these tests. She answered with an emphatic “No.” She said if there is “one takeaway” she wants everyone to get, it’s that students “shouldn’t jump through hoops” to take these tests. “We don’t need the scores,” she said. Please consider that if you are thinking about sending your student abroad to take either test.
CIS Community Survey
Please take a few minutes to complete the Council of International Schools Community Survey sent today by Mr. Williams. This survey is an important part of our accreditation process and will help guide our plans for continuous improvement.
Skyward is the secured student information system used at CAC. The gradebook section of Family Access allows students and parents to view student progress each fortnight. Teachers are available to speak to students in person and on Tutorial Tuesdays about progress and academic performance.
Upcoming Skyward opening dates: Sept. 24, Oct. 8.
October 6 Holiday
Tuesday, October 6 is the Armed Forces holiday. There will be no Tutorial Tuesday for that week. However, the Prime Minister may announce that the holiday will be moved to Thursday, October 8. If the holiday is moved, the rotation for the week will proceed as follows:
Sunday, Oct. 4: A1
Monday, Oct. 5: A2
Tuesday, Oct. 6: E1
Wednesday, Oct. 7: E2
If the holiday is not moved, Wednesday will be an E1 day and Thursday and E2 day as normal.
Health and Safety Checklist
Please take time to review the checklists for students and parents (click here) related to health and safety. As with anything, teenagers will require practice to develop good habits. Please make sure your child knows how to properly wear a mask and does so in all public areas. Please also model appropriate wearing of masks, as they will follow your example. We need to be quite strict about wearing masks and maintaining social distance on campus. Students who do not comply with health and safety protocols will be sent home.
Community Campus Access for Students
Students are able to access campus during community hours by signing up through the CAC Dashboard. If your student is taking advantage of this opportunity, please make sure they are familiar with and follow all mitigation measures, which they can view when they sign up. Students who violate rules will lose community access privileges.
Food on campus
Campus food vendors remain closed for the time being. Students are encouraged to bring healthy snacks and lunch from home. Food deliveries for HS students are allowed to the back gate only.

CAC libraries on Saturdays
As we get ready to allow the ES students in to the library to browse and checkout, we have made more changes to the ES library. For our parents who visit the ES library on Saturdays, please expect the library to look a little different. Signs on the door will outline the set up for students during the week and for parents on Saturdays. You can preview the poster here.
The MHS library will remain the same.
To make a 30 minute appointment to visit our libraries on Saturdays, please log in to the CAC dashboard and look for the box “Campus Facilities Online Booking.”

The Booster Club has been working hard with CAC’s IT department to get our online Spirit Store up and running. We appreciate your patience while we finish up with the final adjustments. We will be sure to widely advertise when the Spirit Store is ready for business. We will be offering a vast array of products including: PE uniforms, masks, spirit wear and school supplies. The Spirit Store will offer the options of both safe curbside pick-up and delivery (within Maadi). We appreciate your understanding with this new endeavor that the Booster Club is undertaking. We are sure it will be worth the wait! Thanks!

Let’s put our ideas together “THE IDEAS TANK”
We have created a google form that will serve as a tank of ideas. Questions proposed on this form will vary based on the school phases, safety measures & the calendar. This form will serve as a channel of communication with our CAC community to coordinate and put our ideas into action. The Ideas Tank Form link will be shared regularly in the newsletters.. Students may share their ideas and suggest the next questions, teachers may use these questions in a discussion in their classrooms, parents may start the conversation at their dinner table. We need everyone on board! Our first question will be;
“How can we contribute to the community while maintaining physical distance & managing our own safety?”.
Click here to send your ideas: THE IDEAS TANK. Selected ideas may be shared for inspiration.
