CAC High School Principal’s Notes

As we approach the year-end, our students are gearing up for a well-deserved holiday break. We encourage them to take this time to unwind, connect with family, and take part in activities they are passionate about. While some students may have pending school-related tasks, striking a balance between responsibilities and the need to recharge is important, especially during this holiday season.

CAC will resume its regular schedule on Wednesday, January 8, and we look forward to welcoming everybody back on that day. On January 16, we will be sharing the semester one report cards, providing you with insights into your child’s academic progress.

Lost and Found Items

Finally, please take a look at the photos of the HS Lost and Found items. These will be donated on Monday next week if not reclaimed by students. Parents are also welcome to visit the lost and found at any time to look for missing items.

Best wishes for a joyful holiday season and here’s to a wonderful holiday for all.

Our wonderful Senior parents

Thank you to the Booster Club

It’s that time of year and the holiday season is almost upon us! We must say a big thank you to our senior parents for providing a wonderful holiday celebration for the senior class today. Pizza and churros were well received by the students, as were the thoughtful gifts. Also, a big thank you to the ever-wonderful Booster Club for providing them with some hot chocolate to accompany the food.

Semester exams run from Tuesday 10 December to Sunday 15 December, with make-up exams on Monday 16 December. Students with off campus privileges are allowed to leave campus after their last exam for the day. For students who do not have off-campus privileges, their parents may approve temporary privileges to leave campus early during Exams Week. In these cases, parents should email the HS office to give temporary authorization, and the student should stop by the HS Office with his/her ID card.

Students must sit for their exams as scheduled. Only in cases of medical or family emergency may a student retake a missed exam. If a student is unable to attend school for these reasons, parents are asked to email the school by 9:00 am, and submit documentation upon their child’s return to school. Please feel free to email Ms. McCall if you have any additional questions about attendance during exams week. We wish students all the best in their exam endeavors next week.

Go Eagles!!!

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

The faculty were deeply grateful to our wonderful Parent Teacher Organization today as we all met together at lunchtime to enjoy a beautiful lunch that was provided by our parents. The annual Teacher Appreciation Lunch is a fixture in the CAC calendar and I would like to reach out and give my thanks to all of our parent community for the wonderful support you show for our school through the course of the year.

Looking ahead, in classes over the next two weeks more time will be devoted to preparing our students for the end of semester exams. These cumulative assessments will take place for all students in grade 9 through 12 and they provide a valuable insight into how students are doing academically as they progress through the courses.

For our Grade 9 students, this will be the first set of formal high school exams they have experienced and as such they may naturally be feeling a little anxious about it. As parents, you can help by reassuring your children that through carefully planned study, working collaboratively with their teachers, and taking a balanced and healthy approach to life in the run-up to the exams they will inevitably perform well. You can also access the presentation from today’s parent coffee where we discussed semester exams [here]. Please also find a link to effective study skills resources that were shared during the session.

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.

Upcoming college visits (parents are always welcome!):

Thursday, Dec 5th: Outside of the high school at lunch time (11:15-12 noon):
IMI Switzerland

Grade 9: Class of 2028:

During our freshman seminars this week, we had the opportunity to engage our students with valuable insights from upperclassmen regarding final exams this semester. These experienced NHS students shared their firsthand knowledge about what to expect and emphasized effective study techniques, debunking the myth that cramming is a successful strategy. The upperclassmen also provided a supportive environment by answering questions and addressing concerns, helping our freshmen feel more prepared and confident as they approach this crucial academic milestone. We believe that these peer-led discussions foster a sense of community and encourage positive study habits that will benefit our students throughout their high school journey.

Grade 12: Class of 2025:

1.Seniors who are applying for any university with a deadline through Jan 15th, 2025, should turn in their DRF Document Request Forms to our office by Dec. 8th, 2024 Good luck to our seniors with their applications!

2.Seniors can stop by to get college help! Counselors are holding drop in help sessions for essays and applications ongoing this fall at lunch time: the schedule is here. Seniors can also schedule additional appointments with their counselor to discuss college applications throughout the fall.

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

We often talk about the four A’s of our educational program here at CAC. These A’s represent Academics, Athletics, Activities, and Arts. This week in the high school, we have seen excellence in all four of these areas.

IB Theatre Collaborative Performances

In the world of the Arts, last night we enjoyed some truly incredible performances from our IB Theatre students. Two groups of students worked collaboratively on their performances, a major component of their internal assessment for the IB Theatre course, and they presented them to an audience of parents, friends, and faculty. The two performances were starkly different in design, however, they were unified by a highly intelligent approach to theater making and very sophisticated use of the tools that they have learned so far in the course. Congratulations to them!

Season 1 Athletic Awards

In the area of Athletics, we celebrated the end of Season One with the Fall Athletic Awards on Monday evening. More than 160 student-athletes participated in the program this season. Our cross-country, volleyball, and soccer teams were all highly successful throughout the season and in their final international tournaments bringing home many medals and trophies. We are always very proud of our student-athletes, particularly how they balance the rigorous demands of the athletic program with the equally challenging demands of our academic program.

46th CACMUN Conference gets underway

HS/MS Band and Choir at CACMUN

Speaking of Academics and Activities, this weekend we welcomed more than 300 students to the 46th annual CAC MUN conference, an activity that is combined with academic rigor. Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of the United Nations where students take on the roles of delegates representing countries or organizations. They engage in debates, draft resolutions, and work collaboratively to address global issues. Through MUN, students develop valuable skills such as critical thinking, public speaking, research, diplomacy, and teamwork, all while gaining a deeper understanding of international relations and global challenges

Looking ahead to next week, we now have just two teaching weeks remaining before the end-of-semester exams begin. Now is a great time for you to connect with your students and ask them questions about the consolidation of their learning. How are they feeling about the topics they’ve studied? How have they found the assessments done so far? And how are they feeling about the upcoming exams?

For our Grade 9 parents and students, this is the first time they will experience semester exams, and some nerves or anxiety are to be expected. Our Grade 9 teachers and counselors will be working with the students over the next couple of weeks to help them feel prepared for these exams. While they are significant and important, it’s essential to remember that semester exams represent only one piece of the assessment picture for the entire semester. The exams themselves are weighted at no more than 20% of the total grade. We do this to ensure that students take the examinations seriously, without weighting them so heavily that an unfortunate performance on a single exam would compromise their semester grade.

If you’re interested in learning more about the exams and how to support your child during this period, please join us for the Parent Coffee Morning next week on Wednesday 27th of November, where we will be discussing this topic. Additionally, at this coffee morning we invite all parents of students taking IB courses to participate in a discussion as part of our IB authorization process. You’ll be hearing more about this opportunity from Mr. Mortelette early next week.

In the meantime, I wish you a wonderful weekend ahead. I hope you enjoy the beautiful weather as we move toward the winter season.

Counseling Department Announcements

Week of November 21, 2024

All grades:

Thanks to SAIC Art College for the Portfolio Review Session: Thanks to Anita Bharwaj, admissions representative from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, who joined us Monday afternoon during the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) meeting to go over art portfolio techniques. She showed examples of how a student’s artwork can be represented through Slideroom and other portfolio software programs such that it will put the artwork in the best format to show the student’s skills and talents. She also talked about how to formulate an artist’s statement (philosophy and ethos of their artwork). Lastly, she talked about the excellent educational opportunities at SAIC for bachelor’s programs in the variety of art programs they offer.

Grade 11:

The counselors recently met with the 11th-grade students to reflect on their experiences during the first quarter and review their academic progress. This session held during their Flex provided an opportunity for students to set goals for the remainder of the semester and discuss strategies for continued success.

As part of our focus on future planning, we engaged in research about various colleges, considering factors such as selectivity, size, setting, majors, to help students identify institutions that may be a good fit for them. We utilized Maia Learning to assist in exploring these options and understanding the differences among colleges. Additionally, we reviewed PSAT score results and had valuable discussions about standardized testing, including developing a suitable testing timeline tailored to each student’s needs. We look forward to continuing to explore college and careers with students in January at our next Junior Seminar.

The Annual General Services Staff (GSS) Appreciation Lunch

The GSS Appreciation Lunch has been a CAC tradition since 2013 where the entire CAC community comes together to show appreciation for our hard-working GSS teams. These teams are the: security guards, janitors, gardeners, bus monitors, drivers, car washers, electricians, painters & carpenters. A total of 180 members. Without their hard work and dedication, CAC wouldn’t be the same! On that day, we organize the packing of delivered meals relying on the generous contributions of the CAC community.

Our annual GSS Appreciation Lunch is a chance to thank these essential team members and their families. We need your help to make it special. A well-priced meal costs around 1,200 EGP, but contributions of any amount and in any currency are greatly appreciated. Last year, your generosity was overwhelming, and with rising prices, we hope to make an even bigger impact this year. You can contribute in cash or use Instapay, Venmo, or Zelle.

For specific details, please refer to the flyer.

Thank you for your kindness and support in recognizing those who do so much for our community!

Forever is Now Field Trip

Student Artwork on Display in the HS Lobby

Students in our Studio Art 2 and IB Visual Art classes enjoyed a wonderful field trip this week. The group traveled to the Pyramids of Giza to view the Forever Is Now art installation. This exhibit features large, site-specific open-air sculptures inspired by the setting of the Great Pyramids. The students took a guided tour of the site, observed the artworks, and completed journals and reflections based on their experiences. Excursions such as this deepen and enrich the curriculum by allowing students to engage firsthand with artwork in the field.

In our other IB arts class, the higher-level Theater students have been working on collaborative performances as part of their internal assessment for the IB course. These performances will take place next week in the theater at 6:00 PM on Wednesday. We would be delighted to welcome parents to attend.

Also next week, we have an early release day on Tuesday, the 19th. Students will be dismissed from school at 11:30 AM so that teachers may come together for professional development and curriculum-related tasks.

Looking ahead, we are excited to host the 46th Annual CAC Model United Nations Conference on campus next weekend. I will share more information about this with you closer to the date. In the meantime, I wish you a wonderful weekend ahead.

Grade 10: Class of 2027:

This past week, counselors had the opportunity to meet with the 10th-grade students during their flex period. They were introduced briefly to CAC courses that will be available to them next year as juniors, and we will go over the program of study in more detail with them in the second semester.

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

I always enjoy conference days as they provide an opportunity for me to meet and connect with many members of our parent community. We deeply appreciate the incredible support you provide and value your partnership in your children’s learning journey. Today, it was wonderful to see so many parents on campus engaging in productive, learning-focused conversations with teachers. It was also great to see so many students accompanying their parents for these discussions. Now, we look ahead to the rest of the quarter and our journey toward the end of the semester in December.

Your feedback is incredibly valuable for planning how the high school delivers feedback to parents and students. Please take a few moments to share your thoughts on Q1 reports and PTCs by completing the Parent Feedback: Q1 Reporting and Conferences survey.

This week, our student council has been busy. During Spirit Week in September, the council led efforts to raise donations of essential items for two organizations here in Cairo that we support. On Wednesday, some representatives visited Our Lady Orphanage, located near CAC, to deliver some of these donations. This kind of practical and impactful service is a cornerstone of the CAC experience, and we are proud of it.

World Urban Forum

Students in our Design Technology and Sustainable Futures classes had an exciting opportunity this week. They were invited to attend the World Urban Forum taking place here in Cairo. The WUF was established in 2001 by the United Nations to examine one of the most pressing issues facing the world today: rapid urbanization and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies.

As I write this week’s newsletter, our volleyball, soccer, and cross-country teams are competing across Europe in the ISAA tournaments. We look forward to hearing more about their results when they return on Sunday. Go Eagles!

It’s hard to believe that two short weeks ago our students were returning from their WWW adventures. As we wind down this year’s program and look forward to planning next year’s slate of WWW courses, please take a moment to share your thoughts on the WWW 2024 Feedback Form. The form will close on Sunday, November 10.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend ahead.

Grade 9 Seminar held this week – In this seminar, students reflected on their experiences and learning from the first quarter in order to understand their academic progress better. They also engaged in a Values Exercise, emphasizing that our values are integral to who we are and aspire to become. By recognizing and embracing our values, we can guide ourselves in making positive choices, especially in a school setting. It’s important to remember that while our values provide stability, they can also evolve as we grow and encounter new experiences in life. The next seminar will take place before the semester exams and focus on study skills.

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween from the HS Office and Counseling Team

Students and teachers returned to classes this week from their Week Without Walls experiences. Although many were tired after a long week of activities and travel, the feedback we’ve been receiving has been wonderfully positive. It’s clear that our parent community and students are deeply appreciative of these experiences, and many have come away with fond memories.

Experiences such as a Week Without Walls excursion or activity create rich opportunities for students to learn outside the classroom, engaging in things that may push them beyond their comfort zones. They make new friends across grade levels and visit places they wouldn’t otherwise see. These kinds of memories last a lifetime. CAC is proud of its Week Without Walls program, and we are extremely grateful to our faculty and staff who dedicate endless time and energy to planning and making these experiences enriching and fulfilling for our students.

In high school, due to the increased student enrollment we have seen in recent years, we are very pleased to have been able to reinstate some Advanced Placement (AP) programs at our school. Currently, we are running two new AP courses: Psychology and Statistics. As CAC continues to enjoy robust enrollment in the high school, we will strive to find more ways to add to our already rich set of offerings in order to provide greater choice and flexible pathways toward graduation. Our commitment to taking an individualized approach allows students to tailor their educational experience in multiple ways to reach their graduation goals and meet university expectations. This is a wonderful aspect of the CAC education and something that differentiates it from many other international schools around the world.

Senior Parents Halloween Treats

I’ll close with a special thank you to our Senior Class parents who dedicated time this week to decorating the HS lobby with a Halloween theme and, today, provide a fabulous assortment of treats for the senior class. We are very fortunate to have such dedicated and engaged parents, ready to step in and help make this final year for our seniors extra special.

Don’t forget parent teacher conferences next week. We look forward to welcoming you to school for these on either Tuesday 5th (3:30- 5:00) or with an appointment on Thursday 7th November. Please note that parent sign-ups for conferences will be extended till Tuesday, November 5 closing at 12:00 pm.

In the meantime, have a great weekend.

Vietnam WWW group checking in

Today is the big day when our Week Without Walls program finally takes off! The first of our international trips departed this afternoon, and the group is currently at the airport awaiting their flight to Vietnam. Following closely behind are groups heading to South Africa, Kenya and Croatia, with the rest of the trips scheduled to depart throughout the weekend. On Sunday, all the Week Without Walls courses will be fully activated, and students will engage in dynamic learning experiences here on campus, in wider Cairo and all around the world.

This type of ‘experiential learning’ is a core part of the holistic education at CAC. We are extremely proud of the program and we know that it is deeply enriching, as well as sometimes challenging, for our students. They will be guided through their learning journeys by our experienced team of educators, and there is no doubt that they will return from these experiences with wonderful memories and a treasure trove of stories. These are the memories they will carry with them for many years to come.

The Week Without Walls program doesn’t happen without a great deal of hard work and dedication from our faculty, staff and administration. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all on behalf of our parents and students for this wonderful, enriching opportunity. Watch this space for some awesome photos in the coming weeks.

It was wonderful to host the 7th Annual CSCN International University Fair on campus this week as well. Representatives from more than 110 universities from around the world were here for several hours engaging in conversations with students and parents. University Fair

We are excited to inform you that the 7th annual university fair was successfully held on October 15th at Cairo American College. This year’s fair saw the participation of over 100 universities from around the world, including representatives from the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, United Kingdom, Europe, Egypt, UAE, to name a few. The event was open to students and their parents. We are pleased to report that the feedback about the event has been incredibly positive. Many students walked away from the fair with a better understanding of the college admission process and valuable insights into potential future colleges. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making the fair a great success!

The University of Pennsylvania and Dartmouth College

We are delighted to announce that Cairo American College had the privilege of hosting distinguished representatives from the University of Pennsylvania and Dartmouth College. Justin Mazur from UPenn and Anna Dechert from Dartmouth engaged with students and parents on December 14th in the CAC auditorium. The event garnered significant interest, with students from other schools also in attendance. We extend our sincere gratitude to both institutions for the ongoing support in providing our students with enriching opportunities to explore their academic futures.

Juniors took the PSAT: The PSAT was successfully administered on October 7th, with approximately 100 students participating in the exam. We anticipate test results in a few weeks. Following this, we will lead a debrief session with the students to ensure they understand their scores. The PSAT is great practice for other standardized tests often required for college applications. Students are highly encouraged to consider their personal college testing timeline and start studying to take the ACT and/or SAT. Remember, an ACT prep course is being offered at CAC this January! Go to hgl.co/cac to register by December 5th.

Digital Arts Work

As we approach the upcoming three-day weekend, followed by a four day weekend next week, it’s a perfect opportunity for everyone to take a well-deserved break, unwind, and recharge at this mid-semester point. Whether spending time with family, exploring new activities, or simply enjoying some downtime, we hope that our students make the most of this pause in their busy schedules. It’s important to take a moment to relax and refresh so we can return energized and ready for the exciting weeks ahead!

Tomorrow morning, we’re excited to kick off the weekend with the Degla Dash, a fun running event in Wadi Degla for our school community. The Degla Dash is a great way to get active and connect with others as well as raising funds for an important cause. Participants of all ages and fitness levels are welcome, you can simply turn up at CAC tomorrow morning at 7:00 to join in.

ISTA TAPS

This weekend, a group of our IB Theatre students are in London participating in the ISTA TAPS event, a highly engaging and enriching experience for young theater-makers. The ISTA TAPS program brings together students from around the world to collaborate with professional theater artists and peers, offering unique opportunities for artistic growth, cultural exchange, and creative exploration. Our students will engage in intensive workshops, attend performances, and broaden their perspectives on theater and storytelling. Not to mention, visiting the vibrant city of London which adds an exciting cultural dimension to their trip, providing lasting memories.

It was great to welcome a group of parents at the HS parent coffee morning this week. We had a good time discussing student mobile phone use and some steps we are taking in the high school to help students manage their device use during learning times. For those who couldn’t attend or anyone who wants a recap, you can find the slides used during the event here. Our Next Coffee morning will take place on November 27.

US State Department Meeting

Finally, many thanks to the US State Department for visiting with CAC students and teachers this week. The Consular Officer presented a host of topics, including voting overseas for US Citizens, staying safe while abroad, and careers with the State Department. And a reminder for all US Citizens who are eligible to vote – wherever you go in the world, you may still register to vote. Contact FVAP.gov for more information.

Wishing you all a peaceful and relaxing weekend ahead.

Week of October 3, 2024

Grade 11: PSAT for students coming up. CAC will administer the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, better known as the PSAT, on Monday, October 7th, to all 11th-grade students. The test will take place at the beginning of the day and will be two hours long (for those taking it without extended time). Why is this an important exam for students?
1. Taking the PSAT is good practice for standardized exams that may be required for university admission.
2. Student assessments are also used to provide school-wide data on student performance over time and for comparative purposes.
3. For US Citizens in 11th grade, the PSAT is a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

More information about timing, locations, and other important details will be sent out as we near the testing date. This test will be given electronically, so students need to have Bluebook installed and updated on their computers. If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Petrich.

Grade 12: Class of 2025: Seniors have been reminded to submit their Counselor Brag sheet (we use this to write their letter of recommendation if needed) by Oct. 1st.
