Highro Glyphics Newsletter Week of August 29, 2019

CAC High School Principal’s Notes

August 25-29

Thank you to students, parents, and staff for a great start to the new school year. Thanks especially to our High School Student Council for their entertaining Core Values Video and their inspirational speeches at the first all-school assembly.

Here is what we are looking forward to in the week ahead:

Islamic New Year

Sunday, September 1 there will be no school for the Islamic New Year holiday. We hope your family enjoys a relaxing long weekend.

Student Information in Skyward

This week parents received emails from our Technology Department about updating student information in Skyward. Those of you have been part of the CAC community for more than a year may recall that we used to require a paper copy of the health information each year. Last year we moved that information into Skyward, but we do still need parents to verify and update information each year. The process takes only a few minutes. Please read the instructions sent previously and update the information today if possible. Please contact the Technology Department with any questions.

New Parent Coffee
New parents are invited to join us for a principal’s coffee Tuesday, September 3 at 9:30 in MS 115. We will present information regarding Athletics and Activities, Library Resources, Technology, Curriculum, the Health Clinic, and Counseling.

Back to School Night

Please join us on Wednesday, September 4, 5pm-7pm, for the high school back-to-school evening. Parents are encouraged to arrive between 4:30-4:50 pm to pick up student schedules in front of the library.

The evening will begin promptly at 5:00pm in the MS auditorium. After the brief opening session, parents will visit classes to meet the teachers. To make it feasible to reach classrooms with the 5-minute passing times, all classroom sessions except those in Music, Visual Arts, and Design Technology will take place in the Middle School building. Specific room assignments will be indicated in the program.

This is the evening schedule:

4:30 – 4:50       Parents collect their student’s schedule
5:00 – 5:25       Welcome – MS Auditorium
5:25 – 5:30       Passing time to A Block
5:30 – 5:40       Block A
5:45 – 5:55       Block B
6:00 – 6:10       Block C
6:15 – 6:25        Block D
6:30 – 6:40      Block E
6:45 – 6:55       Block F
7:00 – 7:10        Block G
7:15 – 7:25         Block H

Please take the time to get to know your students’ teachers, beyond their respective content areas. I hope by the end of the evening, parents leave with a better sense of why our High School teachers love to teach.

Student Information System and Grade Book

SKYWARD is the secured student information system used at CAC that also has a ‘Family Access’ portal for students and parents to view demographic and academic information. The grade book section of Family Access will allow students and parents to view student progress each fortnight, starting at 4pm every other Thursday (starting on September 5th) till Sunday at 8am. Teachers are available to speak to students face to face about progress and academic performance.

Later this month:

Look for future newsletters with information on a visit from a NASA astronaut, Spirit Week, Week Without Walls, and more.

General Announcements

From the MHS Library

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! We wish you a year full of success and books!

Bookmark the library catalog: library.cacegypt.org – It’s full of resources for academic and leisure purposes.

The CAC libraries are ready to receive our students with new books and materials. New print books are displayed at the entrance of the library. Our ebooks and digital audiobooks are now available via the Sora app. It can be found for all platforms of mobile devices. You will need to log in with your CAC single-sign-on (everything in your email address before the @ sign) and password. The app will call it a Follett sign in, but it’s just your CAC username and password.

Please return all summer checkouts as soon as possible. Overdue notices will go out next week. If you need to know what items you have checked out, log in to the library catalog from your school (ES or MHS) and look for the tab called “My Info.” That will list all of the items you have out.

The Little Free Library continues to offer titles of all types. You’re welcome to take books from it and you’re invited to add books to it too. Please choose carefully when donating a book to the LFL; what you’re actually doing is passing a book to a dear friend in our community, so do pick something you have really enjoyed. There will be opportunities for more indiscriminate donations of used books later on in the year.

The library continues to be a space for quiet, productive work. We had students coming in to study in the library during on the very first day of school and even during the teacher in-service days before we were officially open, so we know that the community appreciates the space as a place to study and research.

We are currently looking for volunteers to help with shelving and other clerical projects at both libraries. Please contact librarian@cacegypt.org if you would be interested in helping us out.

We hope you got a lot of reading in during the summer. Please post a shelfie (a selfie with a book) and tag it with #CACEgyptReads so we can all see what you read this summer.
