CAC High School Principal’s Notes

September 2-5

Back to School Night

Thank you to everyone who attended the High School Back to School Night for a fine evening of building relationships and talking about teaching and learning. Do not hesitate to contact the high school administration or teaching faculty if you have any follow-up questions.

Thanks also to our student volunteers from NHS and Stuco for helping parents navigate our beautiful campus.

Important News about Student Information in Skyward

SKYWARD is the secured student information system used at CAC that also has a ‘Family Access’ portal for students and parents to view demographic and academic information.

Gradebook: The grade book section of Family Access will allow students and parents to view student progress each fortnight, starting at 4pm every other Thursday starting today till Sunday at 8am. This early in the semester, some courses might not have assignments posted yet. Teachers are available to speak to students face to face about progress and academic performance.

IMPORTANT: Annual Student Information: Those of you have been part of the CAC community for more than a year may recall that we used to require a paper copy of the health information each year. Last year we moved that information into Skyward, but we do still need parents to verify and update information each year. The process takes only a few minutes. Please read the instructions previously sent by email and update the information today. Please contact the Technology Department with any questions.

WWW: This year we have entered Week Without Walls rosters into Skyward. Please double check to make sure that your student is enrolled in WWW. Each trip’s section is titled with the first 3 letters of the trip, or trip initials (ex, BER – Berlin, CRO – Croatia, CFC – Crochet for a Cause, etc). Email Ms. McCall with questions. Thank you.

NASA Astronaut, Ricky Arnold presentation to HS

Richard R. Arnold II (Ricky) was selected as an astronaut by NASA in May 2004. The Maryland native worked in marine sciences and as a teacher in his home state, as well as in International Schools abroad in countries such as Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia. He accumulated 12 days, 19 hours and 29 minutes in space during the STS-119 mission. The mission objective for the Space Shuttle Discovery was to deliver the final pair of power-generating solar array wings and a truss element for the International Space Station. While onboard the station, he conducted 12 hours and 34 minutes of spacewalks. Mr. Arnold most recently served as Flight Engineer on the International Space Station for Expeditions 55 and 56.

Mr. Arnold will be visiting some of our High School classes on September 9 and 10 and presenting at our High School Assembly on September 10.

He will also be participating in a panel Space Discussion September 11th, which is open to the public. CAC Parents must bring their ID’s to enter at the front gate.

Counseling Department Announcements

Freshmen

This week, counselors visited 9th grade students during Study Hall periods to begin our Freshman Seminar series! Our first session focused on how the HS Counseling Office can support students in their transition from middle to high school and some of the other resources available, as well as emphasizing the benefits of getting involved in sports and activities.

Juniors and Seniors

University Visit – School of the Art Institute Chicago – September 11th
CAC’s first university visit of the year will take place on Wed, September 11th. Ms. Kate Perryman from SAIC will be available to speak with students during lunch in the library. If you are interested in studying art, fashion, product design, game design, animation, or architecture, then don’t miss this chance to get expert advice from the person who reviews applications for these programs at SAIC. If you have any questions, speak with your counselor.

Standardized Testing
The next SAT test will be held 5 October (this is during WWW). The registration deadline is 5 September. You can register at www.collegeboard.com. See your counselor if you have questions.

Seniors

Senior College Night 10 Sept. 16:00-20:00 in the Administration Building. Seniors and parents should both plan on attending and we hope that parents will not attend without their students unless there are extenuating circumstances. Make sure to have your college lists ready in Maia so that you can register for the sessions in an email that will be sent this afternoon! Light refreshments will be served.

General Announcements

Parent Orientation to the Libraries

New and returning parents, please join us for a session on the CAC libraries’ print and digital resources on September 18, at 8 am and at 2:15 pm, in the ES Library. Both sessions will be the same so pick the one most convenient for you.

We will be going over our new ebook app, the Sora app. This is available to all CAC parents, students and staff. You just need to download the app to your mobile device before the session, and you’ll need to remember your CAC single sign-on to access.
