Middle School Principal’s Letter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s version of the News and Views. We have completed our seventh week. Due to strict mitigation protocols in place, we have only had one case of COVID 19. We are about to go off on a three day weekend, and I am asking that you do your part to remain safe and healthy. Please remember to follow the safety protocols to keep your family safe. We know that students are eager to socialize outside of the school but please remember to ask yourself if it worth risking the child getting the virus.

A reminder that on Sunday, October 11th, we will be issuing our first Progress Report Cards. We will be reporting out on the student’s commitment to online learning and their Approaches to Learning (ATLs). Considering that students are doing online learning from home three times per week, we need to give them feedback and hold them accountable for their learning.

  • Their report cards will include a new ATL labeled “Commitment to Online Learning.”
  • Standard ATL feedback (Consistently, Usually, Sometimes, and Rarely) will be used to assess the students’ commitment to online learning.
  • Only students receiving Rarely in the ATLs at school, or online, will receive a comment.
  • New students will receive a comment welcoming them to CAC.

In seventh-grade math class, students are learning about integers while working in small groups.

According to the psychologist, Anna Johnson, many parents are stressed with their anxiety increasing day by day. This is a natural reaction to the students being mostly at home with little or no escape, with few options available to cope with their circumstances. Archana Basu, a renowned psychologist from the Chan Harvard School of Public Health, is worried that this may leave a lasting impact on a student’s mental health and education.

Parental stress and negative attitude can affect children’s emotional well-being and cognitive development, says Basu. “Typically, we know children do best when they are with emotionally available, consistent, and responsive caregivers,” says Johnson. This is especially helpful during stressful situations, like this pandemic. We ask that you work with us to make sure your child is surrounded by positivity even during these difficult times.

On Monday, October 19th, and 20th, we will be holding our Middle School Parent-Teacher Conferences. This year all conferences will be held online. We will send out a sign-up sheet next Sunday. I encourage you to make sure your CAC email account is working as that will be the only way to access your Google Meet appointment.

Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.

In Partnership,

Courtney Bailey
Middle School Principal
