Middle School Principal’s Letter

Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s version of the News and Views. It was the second whole week of the school year, and we had a taste of how busy CAC can be.

I don’t know about you but this week seems to have just flown by! We are getting the hang of our schedule for the new school year, which can always feel a little bumpy. Time to take a deep breath and remember new routines will soon feel familiar!

We had our Back to School Night virtually, and I want to thank all the parents who attended. Our parents learned about the advisory program and had an opportunity to meet advisory teachers. Please take the opportunity to look at their child’s teacher’s video on the dashboard. We will leave those up for another week.

A big thank you to the PTO volunteers who hosted the new parent’s orientation on the MS lawn. It would have been nice to see more of our new parents in attendance. I wish to thank the PTO volunteers who served pizza at lunchtime as well. The commitment and dedication shown by our parent volunteers are what makes our school community so welcoming.

Inside the classroom, students are learning, exploring, and having fun. The String students are diligently working on rehearsing a musical piece.

Also, eighth graders are beginning a unit concerning motion and forces. They are learning to calculate the average speed of objects such as automobiles, rockets, and tortoises. Later in the unit, students will consider the concepts of acceleration, momentum, and Newton’s Laws of Motion.

And the Stagecraft students planned and designed the bulletin board for the upcoming MS Play Egyptian Pirates!

This is a reminder that STUCO speeches will be on Thursday, September 9th. The speeches will be recorded and shared in the News and Views newsletter for parents to view.

We will be starting the ASA program on September 12th. Therefore we encourage you to tell your child to sign up. We have activities such as Coding and Math Counts and First Lego League. For athletics, we have Flag Football and intramural Volleyball. The middle school play also had auditions this week.

I want to remind parents that we will be hosting grade-level teas during September. Please be on the lookout for the date and time.

Thank you for your continuous support of the middle school.

Faculty DEI Call for Parent Volunteers

The Diversity Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Team are beginning the work on our AIM survey, to gather information about the CAC community’s perceptions of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. There will be a survey, to be administered in October, followed by focus groups. One of the constituent groups we will survey is parents. We’d like to get parent input on the planning side, if there is anyone interested and available to work with us on this.

Planning would involve some time in the next few weeks to review documentation about the survey and at least one face-to-face meeting with us to review the focus group’s plans. Much of this could be done asynchronously. You’re also welcome to join us in our meetings – these will be on Tuesday, Sep 7, and Tuesday, Oct 5, from 3:30-5:00pm.

In partnership,
DEI Team Co-chairs

NESA Parents as Partners Webinar Series – Session 1
Tuesday, September 7, 4:00-5:00pm (Athens, Greece GMT+3)
“Journeying Together: Parents as Partners in Social Emotional Learning”
With ELLEN MAHONEY, CEO, Sea Change Mentoring & The Circulus Institute

We will set the stage for the Parents and Partners series, starting with an exploration of the inner work required of the adults in young people’s lives. What mindsets and social emotional competencies can we strengthen to learn alongside our youth while guiding them towards a life of fulfillment and meaningful societal contribution? Through the lens of Adult SEL, participants will explore some of the most important Adult SEL competencies and create a plan for deeper reflective practice as parents.
